Create job board where projects that "Help needed" posts can be posted #842

I think this is a fantastic idea, but because we already have companies offering support, and people looking for work available on backdropcms.org, I don't think we should pursue a separate website (jobs.backdrop.org). I'm going to remove that suggestion from the top post so we can start working on a solution without worrying about the technical details of setting up a new website, but if the solution ends demanding that we can re-evaluate! Next steps should be:
|
After a discussion on Backdrop Live yesterday, I understand that this is a really important issue for the growth of Backdrop. We have people and shops that create sites but dont have the desire or resource to manage too much code, but because Backdrop is relatively new and small, it is difficult to identify support, even if the user or shop is perfectly wiling to pay for this service. Having said all that:
I think this new concept should supercede the existing resources section, and ideally replace it.
Lets just do what https://jobs.drupal.org/ does. Copy their process, modify it for our needs. Perhaps @irinaz can go through that site and build a list of pages, fields and steps to begin. Once we know this, and agree on changes, we can start building. And although we dont need a new "website", we could still have a dedicated URL, like we do for docs and forums. Tagging @bugfolder as the bcms.org guy. |
I had a quick look at the d.org site. That seems to be very much about jobs (i.e. an employee of an employer) . The discussion at backdrop live was more about projects, which I think ties in quite well with the existing section. I do agree that we should build on what is already on b.org - either on top or incorporating in a replacement. Is there demand for jobs or is it mainly project for freelancers and companies to pitch for? |
Here are designs based on other sites job posting page https://jobs.drupal.org/forum-one/job/17162 with the following fields
This will provide flexible foundation to post jobs for freelancers and eventually full time developers. |
I recommend that we simply use the forum site for this, until we have the need for something more extensive. I don't believe that we need filters or categories yet and that these extra filters might simply make the page look empty and unused. What if we just add a help wanted section to the forum?
Again - this could be seen as a first step towards something more extensive (either on an existing site or as a new site) in the future, after we generate some interest and/or learn more about the needs of the community. |
If you can add section called "Job board" it would be a great start! I am ready to make a post on this board as soon as it is ready! There are two events this week - Non-profit Tech Summit https://rootid.com/think/nonprofit-technology-summit-october-2021 on Thursday and New York Camp on Thursday and Friday where I would love to advertise such board. This will allow to bring into community people who are not using Backdrop now and need help getting into new system. Many thanks, Irina |
How about "Help Wanted" as something a little more generic? I'm fine with Job Board as well. Would love some feedback. I'll set this up on Wednesday if no one has any strong objections. I don't think this precludes a job board elsewhere later. This could be considered a simple 1st draft to see what the demand is and get us off to a quick start. |
I think this is a good fit for the forum, better than on b.org, and calling it "Help Wanted" makes it clear and easy to get to for people posting. |
Love it!!!

Good start. Users would need some way to share private details though as all may not want to negotiate rates on forum. Is the personal contact form in operation on forum? |
The forum is a good place, but "Help Wanted" isn't specific enough, in my opinion. Too similar to "How-to and Troubleshooting" and its description ("Help with getting things done ..."). For the time being, I'd prefer "Job Board". |
Love the idea... and also an ideal place for me to post "Cover needed while on holiday"... I only have a holiday every couple of years but when I do I like to make the most of it... but in the past, I've always been available... it would be nice to have someone on retainer that could help with any problems etc... It would also be a fantastic place to put urgent help requests, i.e. I need to fix XYZ problem within three days, a bounty is available for any help etc... I'm also happy to help in anyway I can :) |
Doesn't look like there is a direct way to message someone privately through the forum. As a stop gap, anyone offering their services could link to their website, contractor for hire page on b.org. On the forum profiles there is an empty section for "Find me online". |
This would be a good use case to turn on the Contact module on forum.b.org. |
Yes, I think we should alter the description to indicate this is for people seeking or offering paid work. Currently it says "Looking for help with a Backdrop CMS project, need a module ported, or have a Backdrop CMS job listing?". The first two could go in any other Forum. Lets make this one specific for jobs. This is what our visitors were seeking specifically during LIVE, lets not dilute it. |
I think the updated title and description is clear. |
@stpaultim , thanks a lot! https://forum.backdropcms.org/forum/help-wanted-job-listings looks great. We can close this issue or add link "Jobs" or "job listings" from backdrop.com Support menu. |
@stpaultim I notice on https://forum.backdropcms.org/forum/create-backdrop-theme that you said you would reply privately. Should everyone have this function enabled in the forum? I checked and it doesn't seem to be there. See @bugfolder 's comment here: #842 (comment) |
Thank you, https://forum.backdropcms.org/forum/help-wanted-job-listings will be helpful for now. |
I propose to set a
website jobs.backdrop.orgplace where employers can post jobs/gigs related to Backdrop CMS. Site would be similar to https://jobs.drupal.org/Posting should have a job description and a way to reach out to the employer. Service providers (https://backdropcms.org/support/services/contractors) can reach out to employers if they are interested in the job.
Postings can be free for employers or small fee can be charged and used to pay for website hosting. There should be no other monetary interactions around this website.
