Barnardo's ran a co-design workshop with cyp July 2018.

First draft of guidance from the workshop:

When requesting information from children and young people you should:

  • explain why information is being requested
  • explain who will see any personal information
  • allow them to remain anonymous where possible
  • avoid manipulative design patterns (dark patterns)

When writing for children and young people you should:

  • use an informal positive tone
  • be clear and concise
  • be practical and actionable
  • avoid difficult topics at the beginning of journeys
  • avoid long paragraphs
  • avoid being authoritarian, for example provide ‘tips’ not ‘rules’

When using photography of children and young people you should:

  • match with the tone of the content
  • include descriptive ‘alt tags’ in the code

When using footage of children and young people you should:

  • include subtitles
  • include a transcription
  • avoid added music or a soundtrack

Barnardo's ran a co-design workshop with cyp Oct 2018.

First draft of guidance from the workshop:

When displaying comments or stories written by young people you should:

  • provide the ability to remain anonymous
  • make it clear who will see and share their data
  • maintain credibility
  • ensure it’s honest and genuine
  • don’t influence the writer
  • don’t mock up writing to make it appear it’s written by a young person

When displaying images and videos for young people you should:

  • ensure images are genuine
  • ensure they help describe the content on the page

When displaying quotes from adults:

  • ensure they have experience working with young people

When writing content for young people you should:

  • ensure it’s update to date and relevant
  • keep content concise
  • keep upfront content positive in tone
  • provide the ability to navigate to more detailed content including more difficult and frank content
  • avoid too much text on the page

When providing a service for young people:

  • provide the ability for young people to share information that would help other young people in similar situations

When requesting information from young people you should:

  • keep personal information private
  • ensure they have privacy and are safeguarded

When providing the ability for young people to speak to adults:

  • make it clear who the adults are that are involved in the conversation if applicable
  • provide information about the adult so it is someone they know rather than a stranger
  • avoid making assumptions about what young people want to talk about

When providing the ability for young people to speak to adults:

  • avoid making young people repeat information
