Key findings from MDN:

  • The <ul> element is for grouping a collection of items that do not have a numerical ordering, and their order in the list is meaningless.
  • Typically, unordered-list items are displayed with a bullet, which can be of several forms, like a dot, a circle or a squared.

Key findings from NN Group:

  • Bullet points help break up large blocks of text, make complex articles and blog posts easier to grasp, and make key information stand out.
  • Write list items to have approximately similar line lengths.
  • If the order or the final count of the list items does not matter, don’t number them
  • Use parallel sentence construction for list items.
  • Avoid repeating the same word(s) at the beginning of each list item.
  • Introduce a list with a clear, descriptive sentence or phrase.
  • Keep formatting consistent.
  • Don’t overuse bulleted lists, as they can lose their effectiveness.
