Is there any reason to switch from old vvveeeerrrryyyy handy drop-down menu to this new ugly scrolling list of links on every page?

I'm voting for rolling all the things back and return to the most lovely user guide design ever created (from CI v2, i mean)

@narfbg Andrey, any thoughts?

narfbg commented Aug 17, 2013

I'm not answering questions that I don't know the answer to.

kakysha commented Aug 17, 2013

The question is "why CI authors decided to drop the old good looking user guide template?"

vlakoff commented Aug 17, 2013

Yeah, I miss very much this top menu too...

My understanding is that the new system removes the need to manually edit HTML. The problem is that the template is not as useful to the user as the old HTML docs.

Someone needs to adopt old template to this new HTML compile system. Maybe me?

Well, EllisLab was responsible for the initial design of the V3 docs. They've also said many times that it wasn't permanent, and would likely change / adapt based on feedback. Given the current ownership change scenario, I don't think anyone is really sure who should be deemed responsible, and if/when changes would be implemented or completed.

Both the old and new docs layouts are not entirely suitable, so slapping the old layout in with the new system wouldn't do any good.

Revert to default sphinx theme
Remove dependency on EllisLab corporate theme - that is not appropriate for us.
Reverted to default Sphinx theme, with a couple of options, which have the side-effect of adding back document tree navigation (next/previous) and collapsible menu (albeit a sidebar not a top one).

Closes #2605 and closes #2354, for now.
This is not a proper styling - that is a separate issue!
