Database structure

BEFdata has a really simple database structure. It's a so called "star-schema" data base structure, since all raw data are stored in one table alone. This table, called "Sheet cells" becomes really large!

Sheet cells belong to data columns in datasets. Datasets can be used in paper proposals. Datasets and paper proposals are linked to their owners and their projects.

Harmonisation of data is done by linking primary data values to categories in datagroups. Since categories are unique within a datagroups, they provide a controlled vocabulary or a naming convention. Primary data are validated against the categories during upload, which is one of the most important features of the BEFdata application.
