In the context of EEG data, we (@robertoostenveld, @jasmainak et al.) stumbled over the following issue that has implications for the whole BIDS specification:

When sharing electrode positions it is possible, to share "template" data, such as idealized positions on a sphere. These data are not measured together with the raw data, but are instead computed ... or just taken over from the manufacturer's report on the product.

Currently in our specification we do not explicitly discourage or encourage the inclusion of template data in a BIDS RAW dataset (such as an electrodes.tsv file that is not based on true data)

Should we include clarifying statements that template data SHOULD NOT be shared?

If we do not make this point, then we agree to buy into the following drawbacks (maybe more):

  • users might think the template data is true, measured data
  • we are distributing one and the same template again and again (duplication, clutter)
