Officially organized in 1995 and existing informally for several years prior, The Bioperl Project is an international association of developers of open source Perl tools for bioinformatics, genomics and life science research.

Facilitated by the Open Bioinformatics Foundation we work closely with our friends and colleagues across many projects including biojava.org, biopython.org, DAS, bioruby.org, biocorba.org, EnsEMBL and EMBOSS.

The Bioperl server provides an online resource for modules,
scripts, and web links for developers of Perl-based software
for life science research. We can also provide web, FTP and CVS
space for individuals and organizations wishing to distribute or
otherwise make freely available standalone scripts & code.

Almost 7 years in the making and a huge milestone for BioPerl and the Open Bioinformatics Foundation we proudly announce the 1.0 release of the BioPerl distribution!

According to the manifest, Bioperl-1.0 contains 832 files. The test suite contains 93 scripts which collectively perform 3042 functionality tests. This may or may not be the largest single distribution in the perl CPAN.

Please take some time to answer the BioPerl survey. Your feedback is very important!

The Generic Model Organism Database
project releases

GBrowse, a Bioperl-based genome web browser that runs off the
Bio::DB::GFF, DAS and Gadfly schemas.

An alpha version of Bioperl 1.0 is available. Lots of eyeballs needed to ensure a clean 1.0 release.

The 1st half of the 2002 Hackathon was a success. Pictures are online.

We have a new CVS alias called "bioperl_all" that can be used to checkout or download all of the active bioperl CVS modules.

An interesting thread on biojava-l started a discussion on comparisons between bioperl and biojava.

Jason Stajich commits code that makes it easier to call external EMBOSS applications.

Each official release passes our internal tests. We are committed
to promptly fixing any bugs in the curent 1.0 branch and making patched
releases available. Bioperl releases are also mirrored by the Comprehensive
Perl Archive Network (CPAN). CPAN links and info can be found at
www.perl.com.

Given our efforts to get the 1.0 release out the door there is no current developer snapshot. The bleeding edge code can be grabbed directly from our anonymous CVS server.

The first official Bioperl workshop was
held in Heidelberg Germany on August 5th 1999 conjunction with
ISMB'99. Check out some pictures.
The success of the bioperl-99 gathering has lead to our involvement
with other events including the very successful Bioinformatics Open Source Conference (BOSC'2000). Since then our BOSC meetings have become officially recognized sister conferences of the much larger ISMB meetings.
