Not sure if this is the best place to make suggestions or not... here goes anyway... can the math that is performed to mine bitcoins not be made useful to the wider-world? I mean there are several very worthy distributed computing projects - such as the cancer-drug project, etc., etc. I think it would be great if cypto-currencies could also benefit society in the same kind of demonstrable way. Otherwise, isn't chewing more electricity purely for monetary gain kind of what got the planet into the mess we're already heading in?

Indeed, this isn't the right place. This repository is used to work on bitcoin.org (the website). Forums would probably be a more appropriate place for this discussion. You should also perhaps read this FAQ text: https://bitcoin.org/en/faq#isnt-bitcoin-mining-a-waste-of-energy
