Add legal notice regarding use of Bitcoin in Russia #327

@saivann - I'm having an issue previewing this, so perhaps this is more of a work in progress thus far (also as a heads up to anyone else seeing this!). |
|
@gwb3 Thanks for doing that. The live preview is correctly applied to Russian pages only. However, it doesn't display very well because it should be displayed above or under the alert banner ( {% if site.ALERT %}... ) |

Is this really what we want here? I'm not familiar with the jurisdictional specific issues but there are russian language speakers all over the world. I am also doubtful that— say— non-money uses of Bitcoin software would be prohibited even if using Bitcoin as a money would be. Wouldn't we be better off making just a general statement that we can't advise anyone anywhere about the legal consequences of whatever usage of Bitcoin that they're considering? And maybe a FAQ type entry with links to discussion on Bitcoin in various jurisdictions? |
|
@gmaxwell The banner is displayed only to Russian speakers and says "The use of Bitcoin is not allowed in Russia." . But we could perhaps go with a short text on the "You need to know" page instead (e.g. replacing "Don't forget government taxes" by "Don't forget governement taxes and regulations"). Actually, that might be a better long term solution if regulations keep changing. There is already a short FAQ entry regarding Bitcoin's legality. |

@gmaxwell @saivann 10-4 on the feedback. How about I go ahead and roll back this Russia-specfic change, rename this PR and update the "You need to know" page instead? Any suggestions on updating the text under the heading as well? Bitcoin is not an official currency. That said, most jurisdictions still require you to pay income, sales, payroll, and capital gains taxes on anything that has value, including bitcoins. Perhaps we could add an additional sentence such as: It is your responsibility to ensure that you adhere to tax and other legal or regulatory mandates issued by your government and/or local municipalities. |

@gwb3 LGTM . The title could perhaps be shortened to "Governement taxes and regulations" |
