BitcoinTalk Quality: a concern was raised in bitcoin#589 (comment) about the quality of help on BitcoinTalk. I did a quick, highly-subjective and unscientific survey of the top ten displayed non-stickied posts on the dev & tech board, and the help I saw being provided ranged from adequate to great. Many of the replies I saw came from members of the community whose expertise I trust.

I don't dispute that the forum has trolls and scammers, but I'd recommend it to a friend who needed a place to ask questions.

@saivann If you see anything that can be improved in the translation template stuff (or anything else), please feel free to push directly to the branch.

@harding Now that I think of it, #bitcoin is for virtually any subject, #bitcoin-dev is for core development, but neither of the two seems appropriate to me to get help with development, do you know what is the purpose of #bitcoin-wizards?

#bitcoin-dev is for Bitcoin development in general. Contrasted against development that uses Bitcoin (eg, web shopping carts) which seems to have little interest on IRC (channels created for it have died), and contrasted against "would be nice to have in Bitcoin, but we can't right now" which #bitcoin-wizards is for.

#bitcoin-wizards is for discussion among people who are already Bitcoin experts. We definitely don't want to link there.

Based on my time in #bitcoin, I think it's the most appropriate channel to send application developers. There are a lot of app developers already in the channel, and the ops will kindly (but forcefully if necessary) redirect people to the appropriate channel if there's a channel dedicated to a particular subject.

@luke-jr @harding Thanks for your answers. In general providing these links is only useful so I'm all for it. I also think it's a good idea to keep them below "Documentation" and "Get involved", just so this page remains mostly focused on "developing Bitcoin" as opposed to "using Bitcoin as a developer".

@saivann thanks!

I'll leave this pull open for another 48 hours in case anyone else has a comment. If there's no critical feedback, I'll merge it in around 04:00 UTC Monday.

Should link #bitcoin-dev :p

saivann commented Oct 4, 2014

I must say my first impression is that #bitcoin-dev would be better than #bitcoin too (more general audience here).

Contributor

harding commented Oct 4, 2014

I think #bitcoin is the correct choice, but @luke-jr is very active in both channels, so I suggest we link to whichever channel he recommends.

@luke-jr your previous comment has a :p, which may indicate sarcasm, so I want to confirm this: which channel do you recommend?

#bitcoin-dev would be the main channel for Bitcoin development.
