With the new feature for tasks "Task Link" (solved the link to the origin of the task), adding the feature to not group tasks by file/source it would be helpful.
In that scenario it would be possible to sort and group tasks by others conditions. Or just a clean sorted list of tasks, ungrouped.

It is possible to group by things other than the file using GROUP BY <value>, though the only way to group by nothing is to group on a constant, like: GROUP BY "Tasks".

Thank you for clarification.
In fact, I was not quite understanding how GROUP BY <value> was working in tasks queries. Now it's more clear.
However, my main focus is how to not group at all. I'm thinking in something similar to Tasks plugin: without groups, allowing sorting the results of the query in any way (by text, values, due dates, etc.).

Out of curiosity (I am not at a computer), can you roughly achieve what you're looking for with a

TASK FROM ...
SORT <field>
GROUP BY "Tasks"

Sorry but I'm not sure if I understand what you means with a constant GROUP BY "Tasks".
Using GROUP BY "Tasks" results in a "parsing failed":

TASK FROM "Test"
SORT due
GROUP BY "Tasks"

But if I use GROUP BY Tasks (without quotes, as an inexistent field), it seems to work!

Hmm, maybe it should be GROUP BY "Tasks" as t? Regardless, hopefully that tides you over until I add first class support.

Yes, it works with GROUP BY "Tasks" AS <something>: only one group with the title "Tasks".
But no worry, no hurry. "No group" it's just an idea to enhance the tasks features.
Once again, thanks.
