I think it would be useful to add a "subscriber" list to threads that helped a poster control which followers* ultimately see a post within their respective feeds.
For example, if your account is focused and primarily oriented around posting macroeconomics, but you occasionally post about pics of Alf, you can setup a "subscriber" list whose members are the only ones that can see Alf pics on their various feeds. The Alf pics still show up on your profile feed in order, but people have to get on the list or go to your profile to see those posts.
In theory, this would provide more granularity to how "public" a post might appear without actually stopping public access to the content altogether. I also believe this extra cost to interaction on user-specified posts would help de-escalate situations that are currently unsolved or solved using quirky, undocumented behaviors on other platforms such as "soft-blocking".
*doesn't have to be followers, but I struggle to think of a good case where one wants non-followers to see something that justifies the potential for abuse
