At least with Darcula LaF, haven't tried others. It behaves like an exception is thrown on the EDT - the UI becomes unusable, although the user can click the "Close" button and close the application.

Seems to be an issue with JDK 11.0.1 on OS X (what RText was being built with). A quick test with JDK 14 doesn't exhibit this behavior. So the fix will be to simply build apps with a newer JDK that doesn't have this issue. Closing.
