In my recent reading of Born to Run{:target="_blank"}, I ran across a drink that that Mexican Tarahumara Indians{:target="_blank"} utilize for their long distance runs. The book was a a stellar text and I am picking up some new recipes that were mentioned in the book. Chia Iskiate is one of those recipes that I will discuss here.

You might ask, why drink it?

  1. It is a natural energy drink

  2. It's ingredients are simple; compare to the ingredients in a Redbull or Monster

  3. It is great for endurance athletes

Downsides:

  • It has carbohydrates (honey) so if you are a low carb or keto athlete, be careful

This drink consists of water, a sweetener (honey, agave nectar), lemon juice (or lime in a pinch), and chia seeds. The below recipes are what I am using to make mine.

Making It Hot

Ingredients

  1. 10 ounces of hot water

  2. 1 Tablespoon of Chia Seeds

  3. 2 teaspoons of lemon juice (I use fresh squeezed)

  4. 1 teaspoon Agave Nector or Honey

Preparation

  1. Add hot water to cup

  2. Dump in ingredients

  3. Stir

  4. Drink when the drink is at a safe temperature

Making It Cold

Ingredients

  1. 16 ounces of water

  2. 2 Tablespoons of Chia Seeds

  3. An entire Lemon or Lime's Juice

  4. 1 Tablespoon of Agave Nectar or Honey

Observations

  1. It does seem energizing to drink first thing in the morning

  2. The Chia seeds in the drink remind me of slimy frog eggs

  3. It is sweet and actually pleasant to drink

Recipe

I have prepared the recipe for import into cronometer here{:target="_blank"}.
