Description:
Chromium 66 removed the 'Chrome Home' flag from chrome://flags which gave the user the ability to put URL bar, etc on the bottom of the screen. This was a popular feature and it would be good to get it back if we can.

Requested via community: https://community.brave.com/t/reimplement-bottom-screen-navigation/21529

Device Details:

  • Install Type(ARM, x86): all
  • Device(Phone, Tablet, Phablet): all
  • Android Version: all

Brave Version:
1.0.45+ (chromium 66 was introduced with 1.0.45)

Steps to reproduce:
1. Update to or install 1.0.45 or higher version.
2. Navigate to chrome://flags
3. Chrome Home option is no longer available.

Actual Behavior
Chromium 66 removed this option.

Expected Behavior
Would be good if we could have a Brave setting for this as it was a popular feature.

Is this an issue with Beta build?
n/a

Is this an issue in the currently released version?
yes

Additional information
This feature was purposefully dropped in chromium 66 - https://www.androidpolice.com/2018/02/16/experimental-chrome-home-interface-now-chrome-duplex-address-bar-back-top/

+1... This was the main reason I used brave (although it would be even better with more than 8 bookmarks underneath the bar)

This would be great! I've currently disabled updates for brave so that I can stick to the version that still has the address bar at the bottom.

+1 Screens can get large and keyboards are typically at the bottom of the screen already. This feature was a no-brainer to have.

Sidenote, I wish Google or the Brave team would implement a new tab feature like IOS Chrome used to have.

Guys , please , OPTIONAL please ! I'd prefer 'url bar on top' ...
May be just one about:flags switch!

But, if so much discussion goes on, I'd suggest some more...

In settings must be 'UI Settings' section.
I. There must be 'URL bar' settings, determins:

  1. 'Top' or 'Botton'
  2. 'Mobile' or 'Tablet' elements layout
2a. Enable or Disable 'Tabs Previews Button' (from 'Mobile' layout) if 'Tablet' layout is set on.

II.And there must be 'Show Tabs' settings, determins: /yes, tabs, which we can see on tablets and on desktops either/

  1. 'On' or 'Off' Show Tabs
  2. 'Top' or 'Bottom' Shown Tabs

So, these are maximum from hardcoded ui elements thats already exist in Brave code.
No need to create new elements.
But would be great if those elements be switched by parts!!!/independently smartphone or tablet it is/...
... And also TOP or BOTTOM!

FYI google is now testing a new UI where you'd have a button on an an extra toolbar at the bottom of the screen that focuses the URL bar. Not a great solution IMO because now you have two toolbars cluttering the screen but at least it makes large phones more manageable.

Thanks for pointing me to this GitHub page from Reddit, just to be clear this feature is already possible in the current version of Brave and can be enabled by setting the "Chrome Duet" flag to Disabled. Once you relaunch the browser, the menu bar will shift down to the bottom for a while but go back to the top again after a couple of browsing sessions for some reason.

I have a bug that makes my control bar appear at the bottom, without an option to adjust it. It seems similar to this feature request... Please fix.

Please make this new bottom bar optional. While I know many people have asked for it, many others do not like it (including myself). The best solution here is to make it a toggle so that those that want it can have it and those who don't aren't forced to have it.

Please make the address bar and shield at the bottom as the home and tab and + are already there in order to have only one bar and not two like kiwi browser

Recently got a Fold, and the disconnect between candybar and tablet mode tab management is huge. The desktop-esque interface seems to lack any concept of tab groups and is stuck to the top of the screen. Vivaldi seems to be able to use "normal"/candybar mode style cards and tab groups in tablet mode as well as candybar mode.
