I realize using git in the generated gemspecs cleans some things up, but it's been a pretty constant source of headaches. E.g., installing git with homebrew and using spork results in the gems failing to load because of weird PATH issues. It naturally won't load on systems that don't have git installed (easy enough to fix I suppose).
It just feels weird to me for a Ruby library to have a dependency on an otherwise unrelated SCM. And there's a bit of a performance hit in shelling out to git three times for each gem load.
This appears to be a duplicate of #1043 and #2023.
