Emojis are supported now by almost all OSs, and there is no real need to do what WordPress does, providing a script to replace emoji codes found in a page with images.

Sorry, something went wrong.
On the emoji front there is still some code that converts emoji to html entities when writing to the DB. Will leave it alone for now, especially since it should not have any real impact on performance
