The editor provides very basic functionality and it good for simplistic changes like flipping, rotating and cropping. In addition to the fact that it is basic, it seems that there is no feature-rich plugin that provides such functionality and therefore it is very likely that image editing is just not something people need or expect to be able to do on the web, at least not in WordPress.

A change of mind. Right now, based on (lack of) documentation on the net, it does not seems worth while to keep this around.
