The existence of HTML editing indicates that the visual editor is just not good enough and/or that WordPress still wants to function as a front page replacement.

At this point in time I can not imagine any reason to go HTML editing which will not be better answered by developing a shortcode or page template, but I can imagine people crying about their lack of ability to shoot themselves, therefor it will be impossible to escape creating a core plugin to bring the functionality back.

Not sure how simple that is going to be. Might need to leave the code in core and just hide the UI, with the core plugin just undoing the hiding.

I can envision wanting to switch to HTML, I do it constantly because the editor is making it not possible to remove some markup I want to get rid of. And this is because HTML editors are still not perfect.

I'd argue you should make some way to access HTML, even if it is not as obvious as WordPress makes it. #jmtcw
