chadoh’s dotfiles

This is my first attempt to do my dotfiles right. I've had a great start from Mathias Bynens. I've simplified his setup a great deal and made it my own. Most noticeably, I like a very simple prompt, modeled after Vim Powerline (so it requires a font with special characters (I use Ubuntu Mono)). Here it is in action:

the prompt has only the current directory and the git ps1

Installation

Using Git and the bootstrap script

You can clone the repository wherever you want. (I like to keep it in ~/Projects/dotfiles, with ~/dotfiles as a symlink.) The bootstrapper script will pull in the latest version and copy the files to your home folder.

git clone https://github.com/chadoh/dotfiles.git && cd dotfiles && ./bootstrap.sh

To update, cd into your local dotfiles repository and then:

./bootstrap.sh

Alternatively, to update while avoiding the confirmation prompt:

./bootstrap.sh -f

Git-free install

To install these dotfiles without Git:

cd; curl -#L https://github.com/chadoh/dotfiles/tarball/master | tar -xzv --strip-components 1 --exclude={README.md,bootstrap.sh}

To update later on, just run that command again.

Add custom commands without creating a new fork

If ~/.extra exists, it will be sourced along with the other files. You can use this to add a few custom commands without the need to fork this entire repository, or to add commands you don’t want to commit to a public repository.

My ~/.extra looks something like this:

# PATH additions
export PATH="~/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin:~/.rbenv/bin:$PATH"

# Ruby version manager
eval "$(rbenv init -)"

# Git credentials
# Not in the repository, to prevent people from accidentally committing under my name
GIT_AUTHOR_NAME="Chad Ostrowski"
GIT_COMMITTER_NAME="$GIT_AUTHOR_NAME"
git config --global user.name "$GIT_AUTHOR_NAME"
GIT_AUTHOR_EMAIL="hi@chadoh.com"
GIT_COMMITTER_EMAIL="$GIT_AUTHOR_EMAIL"
git config --global user.email "$GIT_AUTHOR_EMAIL"

# Tweaking Ruby
export RUBY_HEAP_MIN_SLOTS=800000
export RUBY_HEAP_FREE_MIN=100000
export RUBY_HEAP_SLOTS_INCREMENT=300000
export RUBY_HEAP_SLOTS_GROWTH_FACTOR=1
export RUBY_GC_MALLOC_LIMIT=79000000

Thanks

  • Mathias Bynens (I stole all of this from him and simplified to my liking)
  • Vim Powerline, from which I got the inspiration and the needed glyphs for the bomb-ass prompt
Something went wrong with that request. Please try again.
