There are five other Markdown parsers that run on the JVM that I know of:
- Laika, also written in Scala using parser combinators
- Knockoff, also written in Scala using parser combinators
- PegDown, written in JAVA using a PEG grammar.
- [Txtmark] (https://github.com/rjeschke/txtmark) written in JAVA, completely hand-rolled parser (fast!)
- [MarkdownPapers] (http://markdown.tautua.org/) written in JAVA using javacc
All alternatives are easy to get started with (so is Actuarius in fact). So if you plan on using a Markdown engine in your Scala/JAVA project I recommend you give all alternatives a spin and see which one you like best. (You can easily use Knockoff and Actuarius in your JAVA Project, as Scala and JAVA are binary compatible.)
