Created a page for developer resources:

http://opengovhacknight.org/resources.html

Started with a list of APIs and data portals available in Chicago. Should continue to flesh out with:

  • tutorials
  • tools
  • data wrappers
  • process overview of creating a civic app
  • @smartchicago resources (server space, etc)

@GovInTrenches, @jpvelez, @evz, @MiguelABarbosa, @kfogel - I welcome your feedback!

I think this may call for a google doc to speed up collaborative editing. We can get the data out as json to power the page.

So apparently Forest has been sitting on an iceberg of unscraped webpages.

Great way to onboard new folks / code noobs - scraping challenge, from easy to hard. Here's a thought: we can have a "data webapps" section of the resource page, and as things get scraped the data/scraper gets moved into the data section.

DONE

Someone has to do something with this:
http://app.idph.state.il.us/envhealth/ilbeaches/public/BeachDetail.aspx?BeachID=360

It's so gross!

@fgregg What's the best way to start writing it in the GitHub environment? Is there a wiki setup here? (Trust me when I say using the issues section of GitHub repositories is what I do best.)

I created a file foia-guide.md in the repo. You should

  1. fork the repo
  2. edit the foia-guide.md (you can do this in github)
  3. make a pull request once you got in a shape you like'

Check out https://help.github.com/articles/fork-a-repo and
https://help.github.com/articles/using-pull-requests#initiating-the-pull-request

To start out you can ignore everything after step 1 in 'fork-a-repo'.

Hit me up on chat, and I can walk you through it if you need it.

I am soooo late to this party. Sorry. Forrest has gotten most of mine in here on schools. Here are some more:

http://propertyleases.cps.k12.il.us/

http://nces.ed.gov/

How about contextual data that makes sense of the quantitative data? Like Catalyst-Chicago.org for schools? They also publish data at the end of their articles when they have it to share but it isn't in a central location that I've been able to find, unfortunately. See example here if you scroll down to the end of the article:

http://www.catalyst-chicago.org/sites/catalyst-chicago.org/files/blog-assets/files

Others:

http://www.cpsoae.org/index.jsp

http://www.occ.gov/

There are also other groups related to Chicago schools where you can find specific data, often in PDF's. But it's data that other sites might not have:

http://www.iff.org/

http://www.asnchicago.org/

http://www.pbcchicago.com/

http://thefundchicago.org/

http://www.newschoolsnow.org/

http://charterscale.org/

http://intc.education.illinois.edu/resources/

http://catalog.charterschoolcenter.org/authorizer/chicago-public-schools-office-new-schools

There are quite a few more of these if they are interesting to you. If not, ignore. Thanks.

Gladly, I'll do it tonight. Even the sites without machine-readable data to download? (Or with data that can be downloaded, but you need to hunt around for it?)

Hello,
Thank you for the great presentation yesterday.

Maybe you know this, but I would like to suggest this one as well: http://developer.factual.com/
I tried to add it to the google doc but could not edit it.

Also, is there a link for the "Is there sh*t in the river" app that ppl worked on yesterday? I would like to have a look at it.

Thanks!

Could we move the 'free hosting/tools' to the space below or just above portals? Right now it's buried underneath the list of other datasets.
