When developing with a USB board that has a bootloader jumper, if power is cycled and you just want to run the existing application without you must remove the jumper. If you could instead issue a command to the bootloader to launch the existing app then removing the jumper would not be necessary. This could be helpful if jumper is located inside a box that is hard to access.

Jacob, I really like this idea, and it's pretty close to some things that we've been talking about for awhile WRT bootloaders.

But how would AVRDUDE communicate this to the bootloader? Does such a mechanism exist in avrdude, or would we have to fork avrdude and add our own commands in?

If AVRDUDE doesn't support it, it should be easy enough to add it.
