VLC requires you to specify the file before many options (say transcoding)

There is no conceivable way to get this to work in livestreamer, a lot of apps that do something like this, allow you to specify an option for example %file% to be place in the cli to get preprocessed to the actual file name.

Yeah, adding a --player-args option sems like a good idea. In the meantime you can however still do this by piping the output from livestreamer. For example:

livestreamer --stdout url quality | vlc --your-args -

With 1ff89b8, a --player-args option is now available. Example usage:

--player vlc --player-args '--an-option {filename} --another-option'
