@emariz

I am using Debian Testing 64-bit, Iceweasel 35.0-1 and Flash 16.0.0.257 through the FreshPlayer wrapper (0.2.2+git20150114-1mcr120+1). Flash had been working without issues with these packages during the last couple of months.
I installed µBlock 0.8.0.2 on late December and it integrated well into this configuration.

Last week, I noticed that µBlock finally provided releases for Firefox and decided to update the plug-in, first to version 0.8.5.6 and then to version 0.8.5.7. Unfortunately, videos on YouTube, ESPN and FoxSports stopped working, and I had to downgrade µBlock to version 0.8.0.2, the last working one.

I know that these could be a false positive of a certain block list, but I am using the same subscriptions with µBlock 0.8.0.2 and those websites work, thus the problem has to lie elsewhere.

These are the active filters:

µBlock filters‎
µBlock filters – Privacy‎

EasyList‎

Peter Lowe’s Ad server list‎
EasyPrivacy‎

Malware Domain List‎
Malware domains‎
Malware domains (long-lived)‎
.
.
I do not know how to create a debugging log of µBlock. But if you tell me where to read about it, I could attach it and provide more specific information.

@gorhill gorhill changed the title from Problems on YouTube, ESPN and FoxSports to [Iceweasel] Problems on YouTube, ESPN and FoxSports
@gorhill

What exactly do you mean by "not working"? Not blocking ads or not playing the videos?

@andredasilvapinto

same here on Firefox 34.0 and ublock 0.8.5.7.

the place where the youtube videos should be just show up blank and the browser slows down.

@gorhill

I tried Youtube both with the Flash player and the HTML5 player and it works fine from my end. Using default settings.

So now I need to know what is different on your side. One first step is: all the settings. Also, let's be sure we test the same thing, so give a URL to a video which does not work.

@Betsy25

Using Firefox nightly v38 here, all those sites work perfectly fine here using uBlock 0.8.5.7 and all posted filters enabled.

EDIT: Site below, video doesn't work for me neither, with uBlock enabled or disabled.
http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/12210318/chris-canty-baltimore-ravens-says-new-england-patriots-habitual-line-steppers

EDIT2 : Works fine now. Turned out it had something to do with some kind of cookie of a site that was in my hosts file.

@gorhill

Site below, video doesn't work for me neither, with uBlock enabled or disabled

Works fine here with uBlock enabled and default settings. The site uses a Flash player (Flash 11 here), which in my "click-to-play" Firefox 35 mode means I had to click on it for it to play.

Do you have any other add-on?

@andredasilvapinto

Works on Firefox 35.0 :thumbsup:

@Betsy25

Here's one where i definitely have to disable uBlock for it to start playing.

@gorhill

@Betsy25 It could be a filter thing. Is it also the case with ABP with same filters?

@Baegus

@Betsy25 Make sure to update your filters. It didn't work for me on this page as well, but it started working after I updated all filters.

@emariz

The videos fail to load, as if they were eternally buffering (they are not, no Internet petition occurs.) No video on YouTube, ESPN or FoxSports load while using µBlock 0.8.5.6 or 0.8.5.7. They load without problems when the extension is inactive or while using µBlock 0.8.0.2, though.

I purged every version of µBlock before trying a different one, including the remnant .../extension-data/ublock.sqlite file within the profile, and cleared all temporary files before trying to load a video, to make sure that no cookie or setting was affecting other versions.
In my case, Flash does not even store temporary files (set within its settings manager.)
Again, all of those sites work without problems when the latest version of µBlock is inactive or while using µBlock 0.8.0.2.

The filter lists were updated before every try of those websites (to ensure that every version of µBlock was using the same filters).

Last night, I even tried loading the filters one by one, to determine which block list was creating a false positive, but the videos did not load unless one disabled them all.
I also tried the latest versions with a new profile (not that mine were heavily customised, but to discard an issue on my side), yet the issue persist.

To other GNU/Linux users: Note that I am using Iceweasel 35 with the latest Flash (16.0.0.257), something uncommon on most set ups, because Firefox requires a wrapper to use Flash above version 11.
Flash has been working this way on my system for months, and works right now with the old version of µBlock.

Is it possible to create a debugging log while running µBlock? Otherwise, there are many variables to ponder.

@gorhill

while using µBlock 0.8.0.2

There was never a 0.8.0.2 version. Where does that come from?

@emariz

I am currently using version 0.8.2.0, I am sorry. It is the version available here:
gorhill/uBlock#27 (comment)

@gorhill

@emariz Please, give me one specific URL where something does not work, so we can stick to only one to investigate.

@gorhill

Ok I find out I can't even install Iceweasel from software manager, for whatever reasons the package is not available.

@emariz There is the net request log which you could look at to see what is blocked, then try using dynamic filtering to force allow network requests on a per-domain basis to find out which one blocked is needed to make the video playable. (an example of this)

Iceweasel IS Firefox. It is the name used by Debian because of some icons and artwork licenses.

-- µBlock 0.8.5.7 with default settings

No video on YouTube's homepage works, in particular, I tried this video because it is currently playing on the radio:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fiore9Z5iUg

No video on http://www.foxsports.com/ works. Say this one
http://www.foxsports.com/nfl/story/super-bowl-preview-new-england-patriots-seattle-seahawks-rob-gronkowski-richard-sherman-012115

All of the above works when µBlock is disabled or using a new profile with µBlock 0.8.2.0.

Regarding http://southpark.cc.com/clips/165716/i-misinterpreted-the-rules not playing the video,
Please DISREGARD, it's my very own mistake.

I installed ABP with same filters, and it didn't play either. Opening the "blockable items" list there, I found out the filter below is the one that was blocking it. It was in my own filters. :dizzy_face:

@emariz Your "My filters" and "My rules" lists are empty ?

@emariz

@emariz Your "My filters" and "My rules" lists are empty ?

Yes, they are. Moreover, those filter lists are not even enabled on my personal profile.
In any case, I am posting my results using new Firefox profiles for each version of µBlock, precisely to prevent such mistakes.

The "problem" here is that those videos work using another version of µBlock, thus a false positive generated from a filter list is improbable.

@chrisaljoudi

@emariz

those filter lists are not even enabled on my personal profile

What do you mean? Are you still referring to "My filters" and "My rules"? I don't think there's a way to just "disable" those lists in µBlock.

To make sure there's no miscommunication here, those two are tabs in µBlock's configuration page:

screen

@emariz

What do you mean? Are you still referring to "My filters" and "My rules"? I don't think there's a way to just "disable" those lists in µBlock.

Yes, we are talking about the same filters. And one can disable them through a check box within the "3rd-party filters" tab. Anyway, there are no personal filters, for I am using new profiles on every try. Everything has default settings. Literally, it is a first launch.

@chrisaljoudi

@emariz I see the "my filters" checkbox in 3rd-party filters, indeed — anyway, got it.

@emariz

@gorhill

There is the net request log which you could look at to see what is blocked, then try using dynamic filtering to force allow network requests on a per-domain basis to find out which one blocked is needed to make the video playable.

Using µBlock 0.8.5.7 on a new Firefox profile, I enabled the advanced features and used dynamic filtering to try to single out the issue, but the video only plays after force-enabling all six rules that were originally marked in red (I reloaded after force-enabling each rule, and even tried some [contiguous] pairs to no avail.) In some videos, I also had to force-enable two more rules that were originally marked in pale yellow.

Of course, the video loads normally if I disable µBlock.

@gorhill

all six rules that were originally marked in red

Could you give me a screenshot of this?

@emariz

@gorhill

Could you give me a screenshot of this?

I needed to take four, because there is no way to resize the dynamic filtering window.

1.
captura de pantalla de 2015-01-22 22 31 28

2.
captura de pantalla de 2015-01-22 22 32 31

3.
captura de pantalla de 2015-01-22 22 34 03

4.
captura de pantalla de 2015-01-22 22 34 17

I said six, but there are actually eight petitions marked in red (I might have been using the German localisation.)
It is not simple to name the petitions required to play the video because new ones appear after one force-enables others, but I could give you a detailed, step-by-step list if necessary.

All screen shots were taken using a new Firefox/Iceweasel 35 profile with defaults settings.
Within µBlock 0.8.5.7 settings, all default filters were updated and the Advanced Users option was checked in order to enable dynamic filtering.

@procedural

Same here. Ubuntu 14.04, Firefox 35, µBlock 0.8.5.7

Same petitions are marked in red in statistics as on @emariz's screenshots.

@procedural

Ok, for YouTube add these rules:

* googleads.g.doubleclick.net * allow
* pubads.g.doubleclick.net * allow
* ad.doubleclick.net * allow
* s.ytimg.com * allow

It should work.

Actually, it will work just with * s.ytimg.com * allow, but video loading will be much slower at the start without other three rules, so...

@emariz

@procedural

Same here. Ubuntu 14.04, Firefox 35, µBlock 0.8.5.7
Same petitions are marked in red in statistics as on @emariz's screenshots.

One favour, could you please try a new Firefox profile (1), install µBlock 0.8.2.0 (2) and see if YouTube works without editing filters. Because that is exactly what happens on my system, as if different versions of µBlock rendered the filters in different ways.

  1. Just rename the directory ~/.mozilla or launch Firefox with the command firefox -ProfileManager
  2. gorhill/uBlock#27 (comment)
@procedural

@emariz Yep, can confirm, with µBlock 0.8.2.0 YouTube works without custom rules.

@gorhill

@emariz @procedural Keep in mind uBlock 0.8.5.7 stock + Youtube is working fine out of the box for the large majority of users. I have no clue why it does not work specifically on your sides. ISP tampering?

@procedural

I have no clue why it does not work

Yeah, welcome to web development.

@emariz

@gorhill

Keep in mind uBlock 0.8.5.7 stock + Youtube is working fine out of the box for the large majority of users.

If procedural could reproduce it in Ubuntu, can you reproduce it, too?
My set up is more tailored (Debian Testing, Iceweasel and a Flash wrapper), but Ubuntu is more popular. Perhaps Firefox 35 introduced a new setting in GNU/Linux that affects the latest versions of µBlock. Go figure.

If it can be reproduced, the title should read [Linux, Firefox 35].

@gorhill

This is my setup: Linux Mint 17 + FF 35.

@gorhill

One thing I would try if I could reproduce:

  1. Load the problematic Youtube video
  2. Open dev console of the page -- enable "Net" and "Security" filters
  3. Cut & paste content of console and save somewhere

Repeat for both uBlock 0.8.5.7 and 0.8.2.0.

Diff the result.

@gorhill

For instance, I get this with uBlock 0.8.5.7, for this video, which played (HTML5 player, not logged in):

For instance, I get this with uBlock 0.8.5.7, for this video, which played (HTML5 player, not logged in)

Note that the issue happens with Flash. The video loads if one disables Flash or forces HTML5 reproduction (which is impossible on FoxSports, for example.)
I will post the comparison of the outputs from dev-console as soon as I get home.

Thought: Firefox version of uBlock was still in development with 0.8.2.0. Maybe it worked because it was not as complete back then. Did you try with ABP + same filter lists?

Using a new Firefox profile, I installed ABP 2.6.7 and enabled the following filters: EasyList, EasyPrivacy and Malware Domains, and videos from YouTube and FoxSports play without problems.

Note that the video does not play while using uBlock 0.8.5.7 if one of the relevant filters (EasyList or Peter Lowe's) is enabled. It would play if (all) other default filters were active; but then again, one would not be blocking most other ads.
I emptied both Firefox and the filters cache before every change to the filter list.

Just in case, here is the web console's output of the same video using ABP 2.6.7.

@gipawu

Try to add these rules:

* fwmrm.net * allow
* s.ytimg.com * allow

The first seems to be needed for VEVO videos.

@emariz

Unfortunately, the issue is still present in uBlock 0.8.6.0, using Firefox 35, Flash 16.0.0.291 and the latest 16.0.0.296

@Ziemas

This has been fixed in freshplayerplugin.

@gorhill
