Updates and Marketing #922
"Mass market" or even just "marketing" has no place here, such concept is at the opposite of what this project is about.
It cannot be found when searching on Firefox AMO because, as per Firefox AMO:
While waiting for review, add-ons will not appear anywhere in the gallery publicly, but direct links to the add-on's details page will work.
So this is where uBlock is at now.
uBlock's dashboard on AMO says: "Queue Position: 59 of 103".
So it takes long, we just have to accept this.
Could you upload new versions to Firefox AMO please? The current one available there is 11 days old.
Yes, uploading a new version to Firefox AMO would be great. @gorhill, if you want, I could also help with uploading the newest versions to Firefox AMO if you (or @Deathamns) don't have the time to do so.
I believe if it is updated, it will be put back at the end of the preliminary review queue.
I guess I meant popularity, as in useful to many people. Not mass marketing.
Keep up the good work. I appreciate it.
I think it's fairly popular already.
I see Youtubers recommend it, it was a very up-voted post on Reddit at some point, I see other people (including me) recommend it to other people etc..
I mean for Firefox. I know it's been around for Chrome for a while.
Automatic updates will come when it will be reviewed on AMO.
Until then, there is no difference if you install it from GitHub or from AMO.
@gorhill No, it won't be put at the end of the list when you send an update while you have a pending review. I tried to fix the browser compatibility with the latest upload by deleting and reuploading it, however it was put at the end of the list, instead of leaving the previous un-reviewed version. So, that was probably my (unintentional) mistake.
Will the GitHub extension receive the updates from Firefox?
@MaluNoPeleke Yes, once it's reviewed.
uBlock's dashboard on AMO says: "Queue Position: 59 of 103".
is it publicly viewable? I did not find it on AMO pages :(
@harshanvn It's visible for owners of an extension. At "57 of 105" as of now.
Ahh, Ok. And thanks for the update.
@harshanvn Before the update to 0.8.8.2, it was at "30 of something", so needless to say I rather not touch this myself now, as I am not used to the process of updating and I could screw up and send the extension back at the end of the queue. I will let @Deathamns deal with an update if he wants to make one.
Automatic updates will come when it will be reviewed on AMO? Are you talking about the Auto-update filter lists?
Because the filter lists for me are not getting automatically updated.
@meuwe Let them time to update, they update in the background one by one, slowly, in a discreet way. That's the optimal way to update the filter lists, to let them auto-update.
OK thanks gorhill :)
Mozilla is extremely slow to accept updates to addons on market.
Sorry what do you mean market?
What does updating .txt files have to do with "security" ????
from a security standpoint, it's only positive to not let them "rot" but regularly make the lists up-to-date against 0-day nasties.
@gorhill ok
@Betsy25 it's not about just one particular application or the type of files being downloaded. It's about overall good stability/security practices for your computer.
Addons can have security or stability issues, so as example, instead of just auto updating into a possible problem, it's best to have it disabled to research before updating, and then do so manually.
Same true for Windows users of Windows updates, best to never let them just auto update until your sure there are not issues with any current updates.
Windows has a long history of bad and broken updates that have wrecked havoc on the computing world.
As any good geek of performance, stability, privacy and security, you should never have anything running on an Auto Update on your computer.
I've never known of a Firefox exploit to take down an OS, but there have been and there are at times extensions and addons that mess up Firefox, and I'm not talking about this directly, as towards uBlock in anyway, but addons/extensions all of them overall...
A search of https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/ for 'ublock' or any other word like 'blocker' will not find uBlock
It can now be found, since it is now labeled as "preliminary reviewed".
You need to update the version at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ublock/ to reflect current developed versions
It is, it just take time for Mozilla to approve the updated version it appears. Out of our control.
provide an update mechanism that automatically updates users to the current version
uBlock is serverless, so there is no way to provide an update mechansm.
If I have all the Firefox update features disabled, will uBlock still show the Update Now changing so that I can manually update the 3rd party filters, when new updates are available?
These are the updates I have disabled;
app.update.auto
app.update.enabled
browser.search.update
extensions.update.enabled
These updates from Mozilla are ridiculous, I've never seen updates on any addons I've used in the past 10 years take this slow to update.
I would certainly contact Mozilla to ask them what is going on...
I seriously doubt Adblock Plus waits 4 days to get updated.
You could ask some people on the Mozilla IRC perhaps?
It's best the developer get on top of this and try to fix whatever is going on in regards to this project and why this is taking so long...
What about the filters? Do they ever update on their own, or only with a product version update?
I used to use AdBlock Plus and I'm pretty sure it would update from Mozilla pretty soon after updates were released.
Do they ever update on their own
Yes, except for those without a remote server. For example:
Malware Domain List (malwaredomainlist.com): 1,367 used out of 1,367
Has a remote server: malwaredomainlist.com.
But:
Malware domains : 25,266 used out of 25,384
Has no remote server. This one updates with the extension.
Most of the filter lists have remote servers, i.e. they will be updated without needing user intervention, except if you un-check "Auto-update filter lists".
I looked at EasyList and the date was 3/17/15. Auto Update was enabled. I then did a manual update and it updated to 3/21/15.
How often is the Auto Update of the filter list run and what triggers it?
How often is the Auto Update of the filter list run and what triggers it?
4-5 days. So it probably would have updated between now and tomorrow.
Unless you have specific issues for given site for which you know there is a fix in one of the list, there is absolutely no point in updating the lists manually. It accomplish nothing on users' side, and it consume bandwidth unnecessarily for the remote servers, and thus increases costs for their maintainers.
Are you guys trying to mass market this product to Firefox users or are you waiting to achieve some code milestone first?
I ask for two reasons.
A search of https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/ for 'ublock' or any other word like 'blocker' will not find uBlock as far as I can see. That makes it very unlikely for anybody who doesn't know about it to find it. Is this because it has never been reviewed? Does AMO favour ABP for some reason?
You need to update the version at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ublock/ to reflect current developed versions and also provide an update mechanism that automatically updates users to the current version. AMO appears to lag compared to Chrome. This appears to be necessary to the end user given the volume of updates and their frequency. Unless, the product does not really need to be updated that frequently by the end user?
