+
+Zikula is an open source, open development application framework for dynamic
+websites. The core system includes a complete API on which third party developments
+can build. Zikula has a very strong community, which provides a large number of
+extensions to the system and a helpful support centre in the forums.
+
+2. Server Consideration
+=======================
+Before you begin, there are some requirements and guidelines you should consider
+to make installing, running, and securing Zikula easier. Please read the Zikula
+software recommendations document.
+
+3. New Installation
+===================
+There are two installation methods for Zikula:
+
+ a. Graphical Browser Install
+ -------------------------
+ To use the installer, simply visit install.php in the Zikula directory
+ with your browser, e.g. http://www.example.com/install.php. If you
+ installed Zikula into a subdirectory 'foo' the URL would be
+ http://www.example.com/foo/install.php.

+ The installer provides you with instructions on the way. Zikula require
+ a database to be created at some point and it can save problems later if

+Modifications to the Zikula core system code or database are not supported. Doing
+so can cause extensive problems when upgrading the system in the future and
+therefore these 'hacks' are not recommended. Zikula has a flexible extensions

+1. Das "Forest"-Release
+=============================
+
+Zikula ist ein Open Source Application Framework, das Inhalte von Design und
+Technik trennt. Die Inhalte einer Internetpr�senz (zum Beispiel Beitr�ge,
+Links, Downloads, FAQs, Bildergalerien, Foren etc.) k�nnen dabei direkt im
+Browser verwaltet werden. Durch die klare Aufgliederung in Form, Funktion,
+Inhalt und Gestaltung hilft das System, die Kosten und den Aufwand beim
+Betrieb einer Webseite zu reduzieren.
+
+Das Framework ist modular aufgebaut. Die zentralen Funktionen
+(Benutzermanagement, Berechtigungssystem, API) werden vom sogenannten Core
+�bernommen. Der Leistungsumfang kann dar�berhinaus durch Zusatzmodule
+individuell angepasst und nahezu beliebig erweitert werden.
+Unter anderem auch zu einem sehr leistungsf�higen
+Content Management System (CMS).
+
+Das Projekt hat eine gro�e internationale Community und bietet auch
+ausgezeichneten Support in den Foren. Die deutsche Anlaufstelle rund
+um Dokumentation und Support findet man unter zikula.de. Ein Opensource
+Projekt lebt dar�berhinaus auch von der Beteiligung - wir begr��en Beitr�ge
+von jedem, unabh�ngig von seinen Kenntnissen - Wie man helfen kann.

+2. Serverumgebung
+=======================
+Im Vergleich zu anderen Web-Frameworks stellt Zikula wenige Anforderungen an
+den Webserver. Es unterst�tzt PHP5 und das noch weit verbreitete PHP4.
+Es ben�tigt keine eigene Datenbank f�r die Anwendung, sondern erlaubt,
+Datenbanktabellen mit Pr�fixen zu verwenden. Zikula ben�tigt mindestens:
+
+ * Webserver: Apache 2 (empfohlen) oder Apache 1.3, IIS, Lighttpd oder andere
+ * Programmiersprache: PHP = 4.4 (empfohlen: 5.x)
+ * Datenbank: MySQL, Oracle, MSSQL oder PostgreSQL
+

+3. Neuinstallation
+===================
+Es gibt zwei M�glichkeiten zur Installation:
+
+ a. Die Webbrowser-basierte Installation (empfohlen)
+ -------------------------
+ Der einfachste Weg zu einer neuen Installation ist sicherlich die
+ Installationsroutine unter der Adresse �install.php�. Die exakte URL
+ h�ngt von der jeweiligen Domain ab, aber wenn die Seite zum Beispiel
+ http://www.example.com ist, lautet die URL
+ http://www.example.com/install.php. Wenn das System in ein
+ Unterverzeichnis "zk" kopiert wurde, lautet die URL
+ http://www.example.com/zk/install.php. Das Installations-Skript f�hrt
+ Schritt f�r Schritt durch die gesamte Installation, der Vorgang dauert
+ insgesamt nur etwa 5 bis 10 Minuten.
+
+ HINWEIS: W�hrend der Installation werden Zugangsdaten zu einer Datenbank
+ ben�tigt. Im so genannten Shared Hosting stellt oftmals der Provider die
+ Informationen �ber Datenbank-Benutzer, Datenbank-Passwort und den
+ Datenbank-Namen zur Verf�gung. In diesem Fall legt die
+ Installationsroutine nur entsprechende Tabellen an. Bei vollem Zugriff
+ auf den Server - und wenn der Datenbank-Benutzer �ber entsprechende
+ Berechtigungen verf�gt - kann auch w�hrend der Installation eine
+ Datenbank angelegt werden.
+
+ Nachdem die Installation abgeschlossen ist, kann die Webeite ganz
+ einfach �ber den Webbrowser aufgerufen werden
+ (z.B. http://www.example.com).
+
+ b. Installation durch manuellen Import eines SQL-Dumps (nicht empfohlen)
+ -----------------------------------------
+ Die zweite M�glichkeit der Installation ist ein direktes Einspielen
+ eines SQL-Dumps in eine bestehende Datenbank - diese M�glichkeit ist
+ aber nicht einfach durchzuf�hren und sollte nur von erfahrenen Benutzer
+ in Betracht gezogen werden.
+
+ HINWEIS: Der SQL-Dump ist aus einer MySQL 5.x Datenbank erstellt worden
+ und wird nicht mit einer MySQL Version vor 5.x oder einem anderen
+ Datenbanktyp als MySQL funktionieren.
+
+ Nachdem der Dump in die Datenbank importiert wurde, muss die Datei
+ /config/config.php angepasst werden. Die erforderlichen Werte f�r den
+ Benutzernamen und das Passwort k�nnen dabei optional Base64-codiert
+ eingetragen werden.
+

+ Das Login nach manuellen Import des Dumps ist mit dem Benutzernamen

+ f�r den laufenden Betrieb angepasst werden.

+4. Abschlussbemerkung
+=============
+Direkte Modifizierungen (so genannte �Hacks�) am Systemcode oder der Datenbank
+werden nicht unterst�tzt. F�r individuelle Modifizierungen kann auch kein
+Support geleistet werden. Anpassungen k�nnen dar�berhinaus bei zuk�nftigen
+Aktualisierungen auch umfassende Probleme verursachen. Als Alternative
+empfehlen wir, sich das deutsche Entwickler Handbuch oder die
+englischsprachige Entwickler Dokumentation anzusehen, um die Modularit�t des
+Systems zukunftssicher auszunutzen.

+1. Warning
+==========
+As with installing any dynamic software application, it is imperative that you
+keep your software up to date. If you are not willing to do this, you risk
+exposing your website to malicious behaviour and exploitation of security
+vulnerabilities. It should be noted that using any dynamic software has a risk
+of being compromised. You can help keep yourself informed about the latest

+2. Software Recommendations
+===========================
+
+Operating System
+----------------
+All software needs an operating system on which to run. The most common types
+for web servers are Microsoft Windows, UNIX and Linux, though you can also use
+Apple MacOS. The vast majority of web servers are Linux linux based, therefore
+much of the documentation and support is aimed towards Linux users. Zikula
+strives to be operating system independent, however it has only been extensively
+tested on Linux and Windows.
+
+WEBSERVER
+----------
+The two most popular web servers are Apache and Microsoft IIS. Apache is the
+community preferred web server, and most references to web servers are made in
+regards to Apache. Zikula is web server independent, however once again most
+extensive testing is run on Apache.
+
+PHP
+---
+PHP, or Hypertext Pre-processor is a server-side scripting language. For this
+release of Zikula a minimum of version 4.3 is required, but this version of
+PHP is no longer supported by its vendor as of the January 2008. It is
+suggested that you run at least PHP 5.2.6 or the latest stable supported version.
+
+DATABASE
+--------
+Zikula also requires a database to be installed and currently supports MySQL 5
+as a minimum requirement, Microsoft SQL Server (MSSQL), PostgreSQL, and Oracle.
+This version of Zikula is the first that extends its support past that of MySQL.
+Support for databases other than MySQL is provided through the API, however
+third-party modules not using the Zikula API may not be cross database compatible.
+
+ZIKULA
+------
+Each version has specific end of life dates, which are set when the next stable
+major release is made available. We always recommend you run the latest version
+as soon as possible after it is released, for security, performance and support
+reasons.
+
+EXTENSIONS
+----------
+These are what gives Zikula its real functionality. Be sure you are using the
+latest stable versions of all Zikula extensions.
+
+3. Apache Considerations
+========================
+Apache is the prefered choice as a web server. It is recommended that you use
+the latest stable version of Apache, but this is not required. If you are using
+Apache please consider the following options, if they are at your disposal:
+
+* mod_security is an open source, free web application firewall.
+* mod_rewrite allows URL rewriting on the fly.
+
+4. Distributed Configuration Files
+==================================
+In Apache, these are commonly known as .htaccess files. These give you the
+ability to modify your server configuration at the directory level. These can
+be used to change PHP configuration (if PHP is running as an Apache module) or
+to make use of short URL rewriting, and so forth. It should be noted that improper
+use of these files can result in server errors. These are not required by Zikula,
+but Zikula and many third-party modules can try to take advantage of them to
+increase security and functionality.
+
+In some hosting environments it is possible to add a php.ini in your web level
+directories to override PHP configuration.
+
+5. PHP Configuration
+====================
+While Zikula does not require an exotic PHP setup, some basic PHP configuration
+should be considered. These are not explicit requirements but if you have the
+ability to manipulate your PHP configuration, you should try to do so:
+
+* Register_globals should be off for security reasons. Note: the default .htaccess
+* file flags this setting off.
+* Magic_quotes_gpc should be off for secuity reasons. Note: the default .htaccess
+* file flags this setting off.
