* I read everything above and have demonstrated this bug only occurs on
10.4Fx by testing against this official version of Firefox 4 (not
applicable for startup failure) - specify:

* This is a startup crash or failure to start (Y/N): N

* What steps are necessary to reproduce the bug? These must be reasonably
reliable.

Start tenfourfox on a non english system

* Describe your processor, computer, operating system and any special
things about your environment.

IMac Power PC G4 1,25Ghz

No localization is included into the package. I Try to replace en-en.jar by the
official fr.jar in chrome directory but didn't work. I manage to change search
engines, and dictionaries...

How could we localize tenfourfox ?

TenFourFox has slightly different strings than Firefox. It is localized in the
same way, but needs certain additional translations. If people develop working
JARs (remember that the chrome manifest must also be updated to reflect this),
then I will accept them into the changesets. Obviously this is not something I
can do myself, but I'll mark this Accepted just so that people know the issue
is acknowledged.

Managed to make a working jar for french translation (joined) and a working
chrome.manifest

The version can be localized with a standard firefox jar except

- branding folder
- updates.dtd located in the locale/<your locale>/mozapps/update/
- <!ENTITY updateCmd.label "Rechercher des mises à jour…">
has a special localization in the locale/bowser/ folder

I hope it will help

Nice work! I'd like to get more people trying your version, so let me point
some people here. If I changed this bug to French localization, would you be
willing to be its owner and accept bug reports? I'll then spin off individual
bugs for each translation that people can own.

I have a friend using a G4/7450 on Mac OS 10.4.11. I would like to point to him
a ready TenFourFox in French. Since I don't use Mac OS X (I'm on GNU/Linux), I
don't know what to do exactly to localize TenFourFox.

When I download "TenFourFox7450-4.0s.app.zip" and I extract the archive, then a
folder "TenFourFox7450.app" is created. Do I only have to put files contained
in "French Localization.zip" and dictionary files in their corresponding
emplacement and compress again the folder "TenFourFox7450.app" in ZIP?

Thanks.

I think your idea is great.

@contact@jpfleury.net
To build a french version of TenFourFox :

Uncompress French localization

Copy all file in

TenFourFox7450-4.0s.app/Contents/MacOs

Then copy dictionaries files in

TenFourFox7450-4.0s.app/Contents/MacOS/dictionaries/

For the french localization, everything is OK except the about box (wich
display an error message).

May be a problem in instalaltion (I tried 3 times)... No way to create an .xpi ?

Working on German. This will take a while, though, and I can't promise I'll get
it done completely.

In addition to what narcoti...@gmail.com mentioned (thanks!), there seem to be
some more files in locale/browser (as taken from German-Intel-FF) that don't
work as expected in Ten4Fox.

Here is the "changeset" for the German localization. Looks good so far, but
needs to be tested thoroughly.

Right-click on Ten4Fox.app to show package contents. Changeset includes:

- chrome.manifest (goes into MacOS, replaces original file)
- de.jar, de.manifest (they go into chrome)
- de-DE.aff, de-DE.dic (they go into dictionaries)

I need someone who is able to trigger the specific Ten4Fox update messages
(manual download) to look at the line breaking which is very akward in the
original. I can't test it in the browser too see if I got it right.

About the About box: I took the en-US version and translated line by line. It's
very different from the FF version.

I think it's probably time we split this bug up, leaving issue 42 as a generic
"translations wanted" bug, and then giving French and German their own issue
numbers assigned to narcotix and chtrusch. Any objection?

Okay. narcotix, any objection? I will point the bugs back here so that people
can download the original pieces.

The other piece of the puzzle is automating installation. I think we should
keep the "de facto" format we have here (lang.jar, lang.mainfest,
lang-REGION.aff, lang-REGION.dic) so that we can create an installer (the
installer would then, given a zip file, unzip it, copy the files over, and
modify chrome.manifest). That bug is issue 61.

After working with the localized versions (under 10.4/G3 and 10.5/G4) for a
while, it looks like localizing Ten4Fox is generally unproblematic. So, we
should be seeing more localized versions soon. Firefox is very big in Europe;
additional versions in (at least) Spanish, Dutch and Italian would make a huge
difference. Ten4Fox is gaining popularity in German forums (heise.de,
macnews.de etc.), and in comments, people are asking for a German version.

The only minor issue (in both German and French) I found is that the Help Menu
has no spotlight box. This only concerns 10.5, obviously, and this box is
useless anyway since there's no local help available for Ten4Fox. I hope this
isn't too much of an issue because I don't have the slightest idea were to
start looking to find a solution.

I have a pretty good idea where that is (not) coming from and yeah, you can't

Hm, localizations for add-ons are not part of the language pack. They're in the

Hi,
Here is a brand new French localization with minor corrections and the
"aboutDialog" bug fix.

For the addon problem you have to change the "general.useragent.locale" in
about:config

By default it is "en-US" for france, I change it for "fr"

Regards,

Please contribute translations for this string:

Enable MSE/media quality options (slower, if available)

…in Finnish, Polish, Russian, Spanish and Swedish if you are a native speaker of these languages. Google Translate doesn't seem to have enough technical understanding for this, so the string will stay English for release if we don't get human translations by Sept. 10 (French, Italian and German are complete by now).

NB: Most users have no idea what MSE is, and the term "Media" is quite generic. Also, "Mediasource Extensions", which may be self-explanatory in English, can hardly be translated in a meaningful way; most international bloggers/tech writers just use the English term. Therefore the translation should give a hint that users will be able to choose different video sizes if they enable this.

I will upload all final installers with the MSE string in one post Sept. 10., so they'll be ready for the 45.4 release on Sept. 13.

Installers for 45 release:
TFF-45.x-Langpack-Swedish.zip
TFF-45.x-Langpack-Finnish.zip
TFF-45.x-Packlangage-Français.zip
TFF-45.x-Sprachpaket-Deutsch.zip
TFF-45.x-Langpack-Italiano.zip
TFF-45.x-Polski_pakiet_jezykowy.zip
TFF-45.x-Langpack-Russian.zip
TFF-45.x-Langpack-Spanish.zip

Note: I corrected an "error" in the French installer app, which still said TFF 38 in the Menu bar. French, German and Italian have the MSE string localized. The other installers have it in English and will get localized versions as we find volunteer translators over time (come on, it's only one line…!), preferably before the MSE toggle is implemented :-) In the worst case, the installers will continue to function but will show this one preference in English. Right now, the problem isn't even visible to the user, so I think it's better to release them the way they are instead of offering no langpacks at all.

That works. I'll give a couple hours grace period for people to catch up and then upload to SourceForge either tonight or tomorrow Pacific time. The MSE toggle (and the PDF toggle) are scheduled for 45.5. More on that later. Once the langpacks are posted, I will close this issue and set up a new one for new strings for feature parity, as those occur.

Good. Strings for feature parity are easier because they are already translated in the official Firefox. It would be good to know your plans for version numbering from now on to adjust the version checking routine in the installer app. I.e. will we move from 45.x to 46.x when new features (for parity) are added?

Haven't decided yet. We can discuss that in the new thread (#328).

"Enable MSE/media quality options (slower, if available)" --> "Salli MSE/medialaatuoptiot (hitaampi, mikäli tarjolla)". Literal but Finnish.

"Enable MSE/media quality options (slower, if available)" --> "Ota käyttöön MSE/medialaatuoptiot (hitaampi, mikäli tarjolla)". This might be better. (Enable ~ ota käyttöön. Allow ~ salli.)

Thank you. I guess we could keep this issue open for completion of the MSE string translation and use 328 for everything after that. I'll make a post in which completed installers are collected, to be uploaded to Sourceforge for 45.5.

Just to confirm: the langpack in this ticket does work?

The langpack from Sep 13 works and is the version that was intended for release.

Langpacks need a fix for Open/Save/Print dialogs, which are incompletely localized in the portions that are controlled by the OS.

This is easily done by adding an lproj folder with an additional InfoPlist.strings file. [Graficoloco or Victorien hinted me to this a long time ago but I simply forgot it and never saw the problem because all my Mac OS X installations are English anyway.]

I'm going to post updated installers here shortly for all languages. We could exchange the affected installers right away or just slip the fix in when the next custom string update is needed.

Thanks, I'll update SourceForge when I get back from vacation (running out the door, will have limited Internet for a few days). Since this is getting unwieldy, let's put further updates in #328.

Actually, since we're regenerating them: could you also add the code to also accept FPRx as a version?

Which format will the FPR version string be? Like 'FPR5' or 'FPR 5' or 'FPR5.1'? Can I use placeholders in the Applescript? I will need a browser version to test this against.

Test against FPR4.1. It won't get more after that. It should work with FPRx and FPRx.y.

Cameron, the langpacks in issue 328 are more recent (with updated version check routine).
