About the group

A high level overview of your breakout group. What problem are you trying to solve? Make this simple and jargon-free. Links are good too!

Group leaders

Valeria Cerda - Wisconsin Voices - valeria@wisconsinvoices.org

Who we're looking for

The State of Wisconsin is dedicating 0 dollars in getting the count out next year and we all have stake in it. But communities who have been historically under counted -- people of color, low income, immigrants and others-- always get the short end of the stick. Community groups are jumping into action to get involved and often are asking "How can I get involved?", "What role can I play?", "How can I make sure my community is counted and represented?". Come learn how Wisconsin Voices is taking the lead on making sure grassroots organizations can see how the Census is impacting them by hoping to create an interactive map where community partners can see data on the hard to count communities.

What do we know about those in the undercounted areas and why they are unmotivated to fill out the census forms?

What matters to them? How do you try to test messages that may speak to these interests/needs?

Can we do message testing??

Spatial interpolation often needs to be employed when working with "overlapping but incongruent polygon features." Think of when census data is provided at the tract level, but needs to be disaggregated to a custom target boundary or precinct. Below are links to two Python packages designed to "streamline this workflow":

Hey yall!
Valeria here! Just connecting and thanking you all for your work and being thought partners on this! Just a follow up on my to dos, I owe yall a spread sheet of our partners boundaries so I will get that on here soon! After that, I would love to sit down and project plan another project on how we can continue developing things for this! It can be during Hack Night or before.

Let me know what you all think.

Hey Yall,
It was good working with you all and focusing our teams work by setting some goals, audiences.

Here is a doodle poll ! https://doodle.com/poll/5pn9epmfw68wni33

Please fill it out. We are really trying to craft something soon since this is very time sensitive. We are less than 6 months away from the Census.

Messed around with making maps in leaflet and d3. Leaflet is better for our purposes. See repo:

I'm not sure the project cards will work that well with using github issues the way we currently are. I think using projects would be most helpful if we were to share a link to an entirely new github repository (folder) and create the github project there.

Some great thoughts/considerations from @mitchellhenke

If prioritization of resources is the most pressing question, the initial solution is maybe something more rudimentary like a spreadsheet of census tracts that can be sorted by combinations of attributes, and the ability to get addresses within them

tracts with >Z% minority population and <X% return rate are first priority, then <X% return rate, or whatever

(just wanted to capture this)

  • Ought we consider the fact that kids from any given city are dispersed around the city, since neighborhood schools are few and far between (or non-existent)? What are the implications of this? How could this help or hinder ed/outreach?

Reminder to pls fill out that doodle! Also, this article is very informative about security threats and project mismanagement as it relates to the on-line census info collection method.

"The president abandoned that effort in July after the U.S. Supreme Court rejected it, cheering civil rights groups who had worried it would dissuade immigrants from responding and cost their communities political representation and federal dollars. Still, an October 18 study by the nonpartisan Pew Research Center found that more than one-fifth of Hispanics say they may not participate in next year's census, compared to 12% of whites."
