Install CogStat on Windows

  1. If you update from a previous version, uninstall the previous CogStat first (uninstall is available in the Start menu).
  2. Download the installer (.exe file), and run it.
  3. After the installation, CogStat is available from the Start menu.

Install CogStat for Jupyter Notebook on Windows

If you don't know what the Jupyter Notebook is, then install the regular version. (Or learn the basics of Python computer programming language and Jupyter Notebook and get back then.) Otherwise follow these steps:

  1. Download and install your favorite Python distribution (e.g. WinPython or Anaconda)
  2. Download the CogStat Python package (.tar.gz file), and install it: pip install cogstat-version.tar.gz (use the version number of your downloaded file).
  3. Now you can use CogStat in Jupyter Notebook.

Install and use CogStat on Linux

At the moment we don't have a simple installer for Linux.

Follow these steps to install and run CogStat on Linux:

  1. Install some required packages (you may skip this part, if you update your CogStat, and have already run this before)
    • On a Debian or on an Ubuntu based distribution you can use the command line:
      • Up to version 1.7:
        • sudo apt-get install python2.7 python-numpy python-pandas python-scipy python-statsmodels python-matplotlib python-qt4 r-base python-rpy2 r-cran-car python-tk python-pip ipython-notebook python-setuptools
      • From version 1.8:
        • sudo apt-get install python3 python3-numpy python3-pandas python3-scipy python3-statsmodels python3-matplotlib python3-pyqt5 python3-tk python3-pip python3-notebook python3-setuptools
      • You can also install the packages with any graphical package manager.
      • Some of these packages might be already on your system.
      • On other distributions the package names might differ.
    • Up to version 1.7: If you use RTL language (e.g., Hebrew or Farsi), install python-bidi package: pip install python-bidi
  2. Download the CogStat python package (.tar.gz file), and install it:
    • Up to version 1.7:
      • On a Debian or an Ubuntu based distribution use the command line: sudo pip install cogstat-version.tar.gz (use the version number of your downloaded file).
    • From version 1.8:
      • On a Debian or an Ubuntu based distribution use the command line: sudo pip3 install cogstat-version.tar.gz (use the version number of your downloaded file).
  3. Run CogStat
    • Up to version 1.7:
      • If you want to run the GUI, run this line from the command line or from your application starter: python -c 'from cogstat import cogstat_gui; cogstat_gui.main()'. You can create a shortcut for it, too.
    • From version 1.8:
      • If you want to run the GUI, run this line from the command line or from your application starter: python3 -c 'from cogstat import cogstat_gui; cogstat_gui.main()'. You can create a shortcut for it, too.
    • If you want to use CogStat in Jupyter Notebook, it is already available.

Install and use CogStat on Mac

At the moment we don't have a simple installer for OS X.

From CogStat version 1.8 you might follow these steps to install and run CogStat:

  1. Note that these instructions may not work for older macOS versions. Most probably you need at least macOS 10.13.
  2. Install some of the required packages (you may skip this part, if you update your CogStat, and have already run this before).
    • Open a terminal
      • Press Command+Space, type Terminal and press the enter key.
    • Install brew
      • Type ruby -e "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/master/install)" and hit enter.
    • Install a new Python 3 and the PyQt Python module
      • Type brew install python3 and hit enter.
      • Type brew install pyqt5 and hit enter.
  3. Download the CogStat python package (.tar.gz file) and install CogStat together with some additional modules.
    • Download the tar.gz cogstat file, and save it to the Downloads folder.
      • If you downloaded the install file multiple times, the filename may include an extra number, like -2. Remove that extra number before installing the package, otherwise the pip may be confused and will not be able to install the package.
    • Type pip3 install Downloads/cogstat-version.tar.gz --user (use the version number of your downloaded file) and hit enter.
      • This may take some time depending on the speed of your internet connection.
  4. Run CogStat
    • Type python3 -c 'from cogstat import cogstat_gui; cogstat_gui.main()' and hit enter.
    • If you want to use CogStat in Jupyter Notebook, it is already available.
