I don't understand the importance of the SimpleCov knowing the test framework used. Looking over the code briefly I don't see how it has any functional significance. Am I missing something?

In any case, I added SimpleCov.command_name 'qed' to my config, but I still get a message like this:

Coverage report generated for Unknown Test Framework, qed to /home/trans/Desktop/Programs/rubyworks/ostruct2/log/coverage. 57 / 57 LOC (100.0%) covered.

Didn't I just tell it what the framework is? Why is it still saying unknown?

The Unknown Test Framework came from the result cached under that name before you added the custom command name config setting. The test framework guessing is required exactly for that: To be able to tell the different test suites from each other in order to be able to merge them while overwriting their own results on subsequent runs.
