Attachable should support non-database backends for cases (like video) where database storage would be improvident.
Alternatively, there has been a bit of work in getting database stores to work with CarrierWave (which supports a bunch of storage option and could be easier than writing this ourselves) - https://github.com/richardkmichael/carrierwave-activerecord . Even without work like this, it seems to be that in the course of using RMagick, we could just use the to_blob method and do the database storage bit with not too much trouble.
