When testing on my local VM, I noticed that a single-slide PPT (147kb in size) was taking over 12sec to upload and convert. I don't think this is related to the issue with previews, as no exception happened in the log (which would obviously be a performance hit). Anyone else noticing this?

@mfrederickson Would it be viable to use the DocSplit API instead of the command line invocation (http://documentcloud.github.io/docsplit/#usage)? I have a feeling that the environment setup (new ruby interpreter, env vars, etc) for the invocation could be an issue.

Mine took 3.6s, localhost, same ppt file. I'll look into the API calls.

Marginal difference on timing. But letting it handle the shelling is a good call.

Thanks! This will also make it a lot easier to implement my IM/GM switching fork for docsplit.
