Current Model

The file manager in concrete5 today is unique from other similar list/detail interfaces. It uses right clicks to bring up a list of commands that launch modal overlays where as other UX (members, express, etc) tend to take you to a detail page that puts everything you need in one place.

Biggest challenges

After doing interviews with the community that uses concrete5, some common trends of frustration are clear:

New Model

The goal with the new model outlined below is to find a reasonably easy to implement cleanup and redesign to dramatically improve the user experience. We’re happy to plan for a version 3 complete rebuild as well, but this initial step is iterative “how can we improve this” for a version 2.

Some key points:

  • Paging and advanced search can be much simpler and more intuitive.
  • Lose the right click for modal menus. Move as much as we can to a detail page for each file (much as we have a detail page for each member in the member area)
  • Introduce an expanded “more details” accordion view to get quick access to the info that people really need.

These comps aren't final, they might imply some stuff that we're not going to do, and they may not include some stuff we are going to do. We also have a few changes we already know we want on them. With that being said, we'd love to hear feedback.

What’s in (...)? I think controlling the number of results should be a priority, directly accessible within the base view.

While this detail view looks great, IMO the most urgent is the improvement of the base view. What's badly missing (8.5RC1) if you work with a lot of files are two basic functions:

  • Option to define custom column layouts per user (defining the columns you need and their sequence. One editor may need only filename, file title, file size, file dimension, file set, another may need other columns, differently ordered. These settings should remain stored for the user and should not be reset when he logs off.
  • Individually definable number of displayed files per dashboard page. This is indispensable for sorting and batch processing or assigning files to file sets (Values could be 10, 25, 50, 100, 500, all). This setting should also remain stored for the user and should not be reset when he logs off.
