Being able to reply to comments as the author or admin is currently not possible I've had to write an extension that flags a comment as "author" with an author toggle icon and a field next to publish to flag this as author. It would be nice to have an author comment to be able to add it via the back-end, instead of adding in the front-end and then flagging it as an author comment in the BE.

Notice the author graphic next to the comment item here:

The second problem is that because you can't reply, subscribe or thread comments, people rarely leave comments, since they can't subscribe to see who has also left a comment, or replied to their comments.

The Third situaton, I corrected with an extension that attaches the tl_comments to the news, events, faq, page and CE elements with a commments button. It displays a comments button when there are comments for this item. If there are comments, it loads the tl_comments DCA inside the do=news&table=tl_comments, but then I add a load_callback to the tl_comments to check which do= it's running inside and then I pre-filter the comments for that "source" and also remove the source from the header fields. This is a very efficient way to see where your comments are attaching. its not meant to replace the existing comments app.

I also wrote and extension to Feature a comment, so a special featured comments CE was written to display those.

Here you can see the News Comment Icon.
