The Contao backend is already retina ready as the most of the layout consists of css (shadows). The only missing part would be icons with a double size.
To make it easy to use for third party developers, it would be great to have a icon generation function which chooses the icon depending on the display.

One of the problems is that I only have the icons in the size they are. We need someone to recreate them.

There are many free and CC libraries that we can use. Take a look at the ztheme_favorite as a starting point. I have also created quite a number of icons for this theme.

Not only the generation function, but also a central location where Icons can be replaced, as not all icons are placed into the DCA, some are hard-coded.

I think simpler and more understandable Icons, also in a bigger size would make sense, for us hardcore contao users it is now clear what is a page and what is an article, or we don't think of why "News" is a clock icon, or that the Calendar Icon is actually showing a calendar. However for newbies this sometimes isn't as obvious as we may think, some don't even recognise the pencil as a pencil.

In my opinion clear single colour icons would make more sense. If there's interest in the community, we'd gladly offer to design new icons and prepare them as an icon font. However I'd suggest to make some of the icons e.g. in the main navigation, larger, which would be not a problem while using a icon-font. However, it might be optimal to also make the backend look a bit more fresh and modern in the same step.

Here is a fantastic starting point to use an icon file format, if we streamlined the interface to be more "clear".

#5080 C3: Ensure all Icons in the system is replaceable by DCA or CONFIG items

@aschempp I remember that we once discussed paying someone to design new icons for the back end. Is this still relevant?

I'm not so sure it makes sense to add retina images without "redesigning" the backend or at least making it responsive and mobile-usable...

People who use the new MacBooks with retina screens would probably be thankful about retina ready images :) A redesign is not really necessary at that point.

I agree, but adding retina images is already possible by using a custom theme. Making it responsive is way more difficult though...

No it's not. You can only add other images. Not images with a double resolution. The DCA doesn't has a structure for it. And no third party extension will implement something like this until the core doesn't offer any kind of solution for that.

@aschempp I think it's wrong to say "let's not do it, because we should do something else first". This way we won't get anything done. Also, please keep in mind that making the BE theme responsive does not mean we have to create a new icon set. It is even more likely that we'll be using the same set.

@frontendschlampe We should engage your friend to create the new icon set now, shouldn't we? @aschempp /cc

If you are referring to the Contao Association, the budget for 2015 has already been planned and sent to the association members for review. But we could certainly add that for next year or maybe cover from an existing budget (like core support). That obviously depends on the amount…

I will talk to my colleague to create an example icon. Should we talk about it before to think about the direction we want to go with the icons in future? Maybe we can meet us in short mumble call!? Because of budget of the Contao Association we have to discuss! ;-)

This one has eventually been resolved with the new back end theme in Contao 4.2.
