In the result of http://djvs.co/c4e83676-437a-46a8-8402-533faf3b622e.pdf
"8"s are actually spaces, however displayed as "8" in that font. Why this happen is still to be investigated.

Even without --optimize-text 1, the "8"s are still there, however they are wrapped in span._, which happen to have color: transparent, so looks "correct".

So the problem @djvs reported seems not a bug of --optimize-text.
