There are times when displaying the asset label in addition to the thumbnail (or file type icon) on entry edit or entry index screens seems a bit verbose and unnecessary. Having an option to toggle the display of asset labels would provide a cleaner, more simple-looking authoring interface.

An example might be a hero image for a blog or an article post. In this case just showing a large thumbnail without the label (which is auto generated from the filename and could potentially provide no appreciable value to the author), would provide a cleaner interface.

Furthermore adding assets to a table row (using the super table plugin) means that what could have simply appeared as a file type icon or image thumbnail now clutters the table column.

If asset labels could be toggled off via a per volume or asset field config setting this would allow for a cleaner authoring interface and potentially provide an option to hide information from an author that doesn’t provide any purpose or value.

If this setting also carried across to the entry index so only the asset thumbnails were displayed in a table column this would be a nice touch.

As assets have the option to view the filename and label by double clicking on the asset these details can be easily viewed (and edited) if needed.
