Originally opened as https://github.com/cubecart/v5.2.14/issues/150

It is currently possible for anyone to enter any email address into the newsletter subscribe box on a site and that email address is immediately added to the list of subscribers! This has the potential to be abused if people wish.

Newsletter subscribers that are not signed up customers are added to the CubeCart_newsletter_subscriber table with a NULL in the "customer_id" column but with an entry in the "validation" column of that table. No validation email is sent out to that address and therefore this information is not currently used.

Would it be possible to make the MailChimp API a CC plugin? Theirs is a double opt-in, which is free up to a certain number of emails per month.

I have used Chuggyskin's mod for a long time, but it does not work with the sidebar newsletter signup at this time.

It would be fairly trivial to change Chuggyskin's MailChimp mod to a plugin - you would be better off speaking to him about that. While an integration into MailChimp might be a useful feature, as it is already available (although not a true plugin), only Al could comment as to whether he would do that.

This issue is discussing adding to and addressing issues within the built in newsletter functionality which has already been improved in forth-coming V6 and hopefully there will be a lot more features added so the point where MailChimp wouldnt be needed.

So is v6 already slated to be double opt-in? As for Chuggy's mod ... like so many of late - he's not responding to customer support, as I have already asked him to improve his plugin ( I tend to call all mods and plugins as "mods" - sorry).

Could you move this one to the V6 queue and maybe take a look at it ? A double opt-in via an email for newsletter signup and also for unsubscription is pretty important as it can so easily be abused - it is also a legal requirement in many countries

As this is an enhancement request, can you please move to the V6 issues list
