My idea is why you don't rename to mc-server project to Craft++.
From c++.

Collaborator edit: Eventually the name was changed to Cuberite.

+ in a name is quite a bad idea anyway. There are platforms that don't support filenames with + in them. GitHub won't probably let us register a project under that name. Etc.

If we do decide to change the project name, it has to be worth it. So the new name should be:

  • unique, so that searching the web doesn't turn up thousands of individual MC servers
  • easy to remember, easy to pronounce

So far, none of your proposals make it through this simple "filter"

Yeah, if you search for it in google you find everything but it. It's too general. Every one of us should think about nice names and then come back to this issue. But I agree with STR that we have to get FakeTruth's opinion.

Quite the contrary according to Google (haven't tried Bing yet). 'MC-Server' returns results in the third and ninth positions, and 'MCServer' has results in the first, second and third places. These are all front-page. Moreover, because the term is so general, any person searching for a 'mc server' is likely to come across us, and if they happen to be a server owner, we have a potential customer.

And, as I learnt in Maths yesterday, if our gains are high and we lose nothing, and there are so many searches per day, why on Earth should we change the name?

I have to add a few things to xofts's guideline:
The name shouldn't include:
"mine" "craft" "++" "PP" "Plus" or "PlusPlus"
The name should describe what is different in our project compared to other MC Server software such as Bukkit or the Vanilla server software. Like that it's (or will be) custom and hi-performance optimized.

[Edit: Fixed failed quoting]

What you have to understand about the current name is that it actually doesn't bring you any extra publicity. Nobody will find and visit the project just because they found a cryptic GitHub page 6th on Google for mc server . Nobody does that. The people who use and develop MCServer find it through word of mouth, or links from other places on the internet, not from a casual Google search. Ask the people who develop MCServer. Where did they first hear about MCServer? I'm pretty sure you'll find it's not by searching Google for "mc server".

Even if people did come to MCServer by searching for "mc server", are they really going to be interested in helping out, or even working out how to download a file and run the server? They want a real, working Minecraft server to use, not something they have to configure, and go on a forum to enable even basic functions. If they even manage to get it started, they'll probably use it for 5 minutes and then give up. So don't worry about search engines. Worry that people who are interested in helping out being told about this "mc server" project, then forgetting or not being able to find the project. We're 6th in a branded query. Most people don't even read past the second or third result, and will just go and work on something else.

If we were called Cuberite, that wouldn't be a problem. you hear cuberite, you go search for cuberite and you go there. Misspellings aren't an issue, just buy cuberight.org and redirect.. It's guaranteed that we'd be first in the search rankings, there isn't anything else on the web talking about Cuberite at the moment.

With a clean profile, the MCS homepage returns fourth ("mc server") and first ("mcserver") using those queries. The homepage is arguably a better way of promotion than the GitHub page :P

The argument that people who use/develop MCS will only do so if they hear it by word of mouth, is questionable. If I happened to stumble across development for something that I really liked (i.e. for server owners a server), I think the majority of people would not care how they heard of it - that is why on those questionnaires there are multiple options for how you got to know the subject - they would instead download the software, try it out, and if it is good, use it.

That brings me back to one of my points. As you said yourself, if the software is bad and complicated to set up, no one will want to use it and developers might be put off trying to figure it out. The method by which someone finds MCS and the name of the server will play a minuscule part in their decision to move elsewhere if they find the software to be unsatisfactory.

About the name. MCServer is certainly less complex that Cuberite, and certainly easy to remember. Here, that fact that it is generic and close to Minecraft Server is a great help. You may argue that Cuberite stands for something too; however, say I remember 'Cubes done right'. How does that translate to a search query? CDR? CbsDnRght? Cubesright? The longer we keep someone guessing, the higher the chance that they give up, and CDR certainly is not going to come first place in a search query.

A generic name is only appropriate when you're the first of a kind, or you can't be bothered to think of a better name. We're not the first Minecraft server, we're not even the best Minecraft server, and we shouldn't be projecting ourselves as a group of amateur developers who can't even think of what to call themselves apart from "Minecraft Server". An original name shows the world how you actually care about what you're doing and how you're doing it.

True, this is not the first C++ MC server. I think there are two others in C++, both of which are dead. I guess that makes us the best alternative server software, what with Bukkit dead too. You argue that a unique name is good and unique. Have you every considered that a generic name might be unique? We're so used to millions of different product names, none of which are particularly memorable unless you come into contact with them often; MCServer is generic while still being one-of-a-kind.

"An original name shows the world...": I once again go back to my argument that the name is only skin deep. Firstly, when I look at a project, I don't make a decision about how good it and the people behind it is based on the name. I look at what is actually happening and what sort of activity there is, for example, on the forums and on GitHub. You may argue that the name can deter people from doing this, but in the real world, any references to MCServer will come with a context (as xoft once said on the forums, "we live in a context filled world"). Google gives you our description, a forum post can be made responding to someone who wants a faster MC server; the most crucial thing is what they see when they click that link. The most original name ever is useless without substance backing it.

With anything like this, it's much better to avoid risk, rather than walk right into it. It'll bite you one day if you just assume that "that won't happen to me" rather than taking steps to mitigate the risk.

UK/US trademark office searches suggest the Mojang has only trademarked Minecraft. The UK IPO has even allowed Minicraft to be trademarked, and that is certainly something more likely to be confused with Minecraft. If there aren't any complaints about that, I don't see why this name should be a problem.

The problem is that once MCServer is "shipshape", there's no way that you're going to be able to change the name without a lot of confusion and lost time. Now is the perfect time to change: the server is scaling up and getting better every day - yet few people know about it. Before it's "too much work" and too confusing, change the name and show the world how you're going to be the best Minecraft server EVER.

That's an unfounded statement. Firstly, there will most certainly not be a reason to do it. Secondly, it is technically simple, just make the current domain redirect to a new one, change the logos, and put up a notice for half a year saying that the name had change from MCS to X. You can even do a search-replace for references to the old name in the forums and replace it with a new one. There have been countless name changes in history, the newest being the Nokia brand being dropped in favour of Lumia. There has been no uproar. No one is confused.

Who says that we can't be the best Minecraft server EVER that is called MCServer? I see companies who's websites are called diy.com (B&Q), lawfirm.com, and various other generic names. MCS isn't even at that extreme.

Say, how did you find MCServer in the first place? Most likely you did a search for "alternative minecraft server", or you went to minecraft wiki and opened its Custom server list, or perhaps someone you know told you about it. In all of these instances, the name change wouldn't lose discoverability, on the contrary, a unique name will make the server stand out more. We're more interested in word-of-mouth referrals than random "google search gone wrong".

We're more interested in word-of-mouth referrals views and publicity. The simple fact is to grow, there must be people using the software. A Reddit thread needs comments to keep it at the top. We have no money to spend on advertising and no sponsors to provide that. MCServer provides two sources of recognition - random chance and word of mouth. In all likelihood Cuberite will only provide one.

Add to that that the domain name is mismatched with the name, so if you refer someone now, you have to specify "with a dash between mc and server".

You can always just tell them to do a search; that's what most people do, even with websites they know perfectly well.

There is a way to settle this argument, I don't like it, but it might be the only viable option, as I see there's no way for us to reach a decision:

Since MCS is opensource, there's nothing keeping anyone from forking it, rebranding it to Cuberite and continue development there. I'd hate to see this happen, we already are thinly manned and splitting into two will most likely kill both.

@tigerw, the argument you've given is not really against a name change, it just really says there's no point in any name, anyway. So why are you against a rename so much?

I know the current state of graphics for the suggested rename is poor, but hey, it will only improve. I didn't like your website redesign either but it improved until it's agreeable.

I agree with @madmaxoft: There's really no point in messing around further. There is no real reason not to just get on and change the name, only against fussing around and taking up time now.

Graphical design is something to work on though.

@bearbin A name change is a huge amount of effort changing config, accounts and code. For the same amount of work we could fix the mob AI. We need a serious advantage to justify that effort.

@madmaxoft, @worktycho.

Do you people seriously want to change the name that much? What about just updating the logo? Xoft is making this sound like something that is going to jeopardise the longevity of this project and in my opinion that is not worth it for us to keep arguing.

@madmaxoft I think @tigerw is actually giving arguments for not changing the name...

I do not see a reason to rush a name change? You say the current state of graphics for the rename is poor right now, why are you trying to rush this then. Do you think taking a step back before going forward is the best way? Why not improve things first until it's definitely better and then switch. There's no rush.

Then again, I am still not convinced. People seem to want my agreement before doing a name change. How about this for settling this argument: let's not do it.

Is there some sort of middle ground that can be reached? Will both parties accept no less than a change/no change? Perhaps the logo could be updated? @NavoDev's one isn't bad, though could be more square and maybe more block-like.

I think that me and @madmaxoft have decided that we're not going to press the issue for a while, and instead work on a new website and graphical design, and other name change tasks that don't have much affect, so that hopefully later it will be very easy to change the name - the new website is already done, the new accounts are already set up, and there's new better design.

I just thought of quite a good idea. Instead of renaming the server right away, we just rename the project.

Therefore MCServer would still be MCServer (for now), but it would be part of the Cuberite project. Then you could search for cuberite, and "Cuberite MCServer" would be the first result. If the change was successful, then you could gradually phase out the "MCServer" from the name of the server.

As per the new idea, shall we rename the mcserver organisation into Cuberite and move everything under the umbrella term?

That's the general direction we were aiming for, but first we need to "impress" the others enough to agree to the change - so a new logo, webdesign etc.

So many website redesigns :P

Does @FakeTruth and @tonibm19 and everyone else agree with an organisational name change? STR is in agreement, I think?

There was no consensus yet. And I don't want to push the issue, until, as FakeTruth said, we have a viable alternative.

I think MCServer or MCS is natural to pronounce.

Web searches for Screen can be very difficult, because of the way the word "screen" is used for many different purposes much more popularly known than the terminal multiplexer. Even in a technical, computer related context, a much more popular use of the word refers to the display, as in the case of the screen of a desktop computer's flat panel monitor. Using the term "GNU Screen" in a web search can mitigate this problem, though it is not a perfect solution and may exclude many useful results that do not couple the word "screen" with GNU. Additional problems may arise as the most popular search engines have started deprecating the availability of features allowing users to restrict results to those that include specific terms, such as where Google has stopped honoring the "+" operator (the same effect can be achieved by quoting a word instead of prepending it with '+').
By contrast, the name of tmux is a far more unique term that tends to return useful information in the top results of popular search engines.

From WikiVS, comparing Screen and Tmux.

For the record: The name was eventually changed to Cuberite.

Retrospectively: I think my subconcious problem with the old name was not about whether new people find it in searches, rather, it was about whether existing users can find the help they're looking for. "Cuberite world setup" is more likely to yield relevant results in comparison to "mcserver world setup".
