Support front() and back() in std::string #2123

Containers like std::string does not have the method front() nor back(), both of which are guaranteed by the C++11 standard (relatively old at this point).

This can be trivially worked around, although it is a trivial amount of boiler-plate to add. I can submit a PR if this is desired.
