What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Trying to boot certain SNES games.
What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I expect to see the game running, however, it will often fail, even if I
have opened the game on the emulator previously (Bahamut Lagoon, Star
Ocean, Terranigma, Asterix, Sparkstar etc.) and have changed files so I
know it isn't the files fault.
Does this issue occur on SNES9x for Windows 1.51? If so, please report the
issue on the Snes9x forum.
No, it does not.
What version are you using? On GameCube or Wii?
Are you using the official build (from the downloads page or auto-update)?
Yes, I an running a version I downloaded from Google Code.
Please provide any additional information below.
It's the same issue as 296. Concerning Bahamut Lagoon, Sparkstar, Mario
RPG, Asterix etc. You already solved the issue, with some test files. :)

this actually indicates a device error, that's why it's erroring out for you.
test files just disabled the error-checking that makes sure the data is all
the error is still happening. It's either the SD card is bad or (more likely) the
contacts on it aren't making proper contact with the SD card slot on your Wii.
Either way it's not the fault of the emulator.

Can't be. @Device Error
Cause the SD Card is working properly with every other device.
CHKDSK is also saying everything is fine.
I will test to clean the contacts, but I don't believe that this will be the

So I tested to clean the slot and I formatted the SD Card (I also tried another
It's a really strange error.
Cause I select for example Mario RPG, then the error occur.
If I choose "Retry" the Game works. If I choose "End" and select the Game
So the error will occur the first time after selecting a game.
I would agree with you (concerning card defect) if I have to load the game
times. But it's a regular problem which always occur the first "loading try".

I'd just like to add that I have this issue as well. And as mentioned it's
strange. There has been a time where it won't work and they you press retry and
it does work. I think it's an issue with the emulator not liking the roms
some roms will not work but then someone else's version of the same game will
fine. I'm not exactly sure but it may have started with 4.1.0
Finally I've also noticed this in FCEUGX.
Original comment by AMatthe...@gmail.com on 27 Sep 2009 at 9:54
This also occurrs in VBA 2.0.7 though I didnt think much of it cause the games
worked, but it indeed happened. SD card contacts are fine. Wii has no problem
recognizing and playing everything else on my card.

let me know if this helps:
are the roms zip, 7z, or uncompressed?

if it's still giving you the error, please try this one and report back the

I am testing "snes9xgx-test1.zip" via SMB:
Bahamut Lagoon = works
Star Ocean = works
Terranigma = works
Asterix = works
Sparkster = works
Original comment by drug...@gmail.com on 4 Oct 2009 at 7:41
All my DB roms (NES/SNES/GBA) are in 7z.
Original comment by drug...@gmail.com on 4 Oct 2009 at 7:44
No, it's not working.
The issue is the same as above (nothing changed).
"Error Loading File !"
But after pressing "Retry" it works without any problem.
I can also choose "Cancel" and select the game again and it will work.
But I got a new setting file in the apps folder. ^^
Original comment by starlord...@googlemail.com on 4 Oct 2009 at 2:13
Strange, I would have expected more error messages. Could you report back the
messages on this one?
Original comment by email@example.com on 4 Oct 2009 at 4:28
wow. Okay. Tested the new file, and I got many messages:
During the boot:
"Could not open sd/snes9x/settings.xml"
(c)"Could not change to device 2"
During the start of "issue" games:
First our famous error message is coming up ^^: "Error Loading File!".
After pressing "Retry":
(b) Could not open sd:/snes9x/roms/Asterix 2.ips
(b) Could not open sd:/snes9x/roms/Asterix 2.ups
(b) Could not open sd:/snes9x/roms/Asterix 2.ppf
(b) Could not open sd:/snes9x/saves/Asterix 2 Auto.srm
(b) Could not open sd:/snes9x/saves/Asterix 2.srm
(b) Could not open sd:/snes9x/cheats/Asterix 2.cht
But the game starts.
Original comment by starlord...@googlemail.com on 4 Oct 2009 at 9:57
The errors after a "Retry" are appearing in every game.
Depends on savestates, sometimes the srm errors are missing.
Original comment by starlord...@googlemail.com on 4 Oct 2009 at 10:20
thanks for testing. but that still doesn't give me the information I need to
it. :(. let's try again. try this one, let me know the messages that pop up:
Original comment by firstname.lastname@example.org on 4 Oct 2009 at 11:15
Tested the new version.
During game boot 3 messages appear:
-loading sd:/snes9x/roms/Asterix 2.smc
-size to read: 1572864
** Loading Bar **
-done with sd:/snes9x/roms/Asterix 2.smc
...and Game starts o.O
It's loading every game with the same procedure.
No error messages.
Sometimes during the emulator boot, a message appear with: fstat failed!
But the games are working anyway (after the 3 messages). I believe it's an
information concerning the setting file.
Original comment by starlord...@googlemail.com on 5 Oct 2009 at 10:35
Update. Okay sometimes the error message appear.
It will tell me:
-loading sd:/snes9x/Asterix 2.smc
-Error Loading file!
-size to read: 1572864
-done with sd:....Asterix 2.smc
But this it's not as often as usual.
The error message during the emulator boot is appearing very often (fstat

great! so sometimes fstat fails. that's not my fault of course, but here's a
version that doesn't use fstat. hopefully it will solve the problem:
