Contemportary browsers do still support the JavaScript function document.all to address elements in the DOM. This was originally introduced by Internet Explorer 4. The variable ie4up is a flag that is set if the user runs Internet Explorer. It will be tested later in the JavaScript to determine if to chose the code path using document.all instead of the code path using Netscape's document.layers that no contemporary browser supports. Setting the flag to true forces that code path and prevents incompatible Netscape-only code from being executed.

The midi file was originally inserted via the now unsupported <bgsound> at the top of the page. Most contemporary browsers do not support midi replay unless an addon is installed. This HTML5 <audio> source stack asks the browser to play the midi file if possible, and otherwise fall back on freshly created audio mixdowns of the midi file in OGG or MP3 format.

The css filter function glow was a [proprietary feature of[Internet Explorer](https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/previous-versions/windows/internet-explorer/ie-developer/platform-apis/ms532995(v%3Dvs.85) starting from version 5.5. No contemporary browser supports it, but the standardized drop-shadow filter function provides similar effects. Of course no designed-by-committee CSS function could ever produce effects as flamboyant as glow.
