Support universal jammy

Please add support for the universal image for Ubuntu 22.04 Jammy Jellyfish released April 2022.

The universal image installs the oryx tool in here which hasn't added support for jammy yet. Hence, we haven't been able to switch to jammy due to that dependency.

I think it's worth re-syncing with the Oryx team to get the latest status. Last we checked, oryx tool implementation depends on libssl-dev which is not available in jammy. However, we could try additionally installing v1 version of openssl and see if it works, something like 👇

libssl-dev is available in jammy (but in version 3): https://packages.ubuntu.com/jammy/libssl-dev. Microsoft repo for dotnet also seems to exist at https://packages.microsoft.com/repos/microsoft-ubuntu-jammy-prod/dists/jammy/main/.

So just removing the check in https://github.com/devcontainers/features/blob/a771e8cb426961dadb6312d857ea272b711714b3/src/oryx/install.sh#L100-L104 might already work.

libssl-dev is available in jammy (but in version 3): https://packages.ubuntu.com/jammy/libssl-dev

Also the microsoft repo for dotnet is available for jammy: https://packages.microsoft.com/repos/microsoft-ubuntu-jammy-prod/dists/jammy/main/

So it might be sufficient to just remove the check for jammy in https://github.com/devcontainers/features/blob/a771e8cb426961dadb6312d857ea272b711714b3/src/oryx/install.sh#L100-L104

Did you consider just removing this feature from the image until upstream fixes it?

The universal image is used by GitHub Codespaces as a default image which consists a set of many different skds/tools and platforms ; it helps users to easily switch between projects by using the same image. This image was designed for users to easily get started with a simple project without worrying too much about setting the dev container config. Hence, the oryx tool benefits such scenarios as it automatically detects platforms and installs the requirements (eg. install python packages when it detects requirements.txt etc).

Given the current situation, we want to keep the oryx tool due to it's advantages over switching to jammy. Let's see what response we get in microsoft/Oryx#2135 before considering removal of the oryx tool.

Ubuntu 20.04 will reach EOL for security updates in Apr 2025, about 3 months from now.

Considering that there was no progress on the upstream oryx issue for over a year, could someone at GitHub/MS follow up internally or consider removing this tool / blocker?

As per #1404, universal now supports noble out of the box. To use it, make sure you reference version 3 of the image. If you require jammy, consider using the latest version of base-ubuntu.
