Sorry, didn't see this comment until now. I uploaded my old copy of EasyGit (including the 1.8.5 tags) to github.com/newren/easygit. I also updated my README to just point at this version since I haven't done any maintenance in years.

Just realised why I haven't encountered this issue before. I'm using EasyGit 1.8.5 (released on 2014-03-09), which has a less fragile implementation of status scraping (it pretty much leaves it to git).
Unfortunately, since the death of Gitorious, I can't find a copy of that version online. There were also other commits to the mainline repo, which now appear to have been lost. @newren?
I've uploaded the last checkout I have (1.8.5) here.
