Does the arabic text in other console applications display correctly? Just
to discard an issue with the font.

@novia713

affirmative, sir
in fedora 17 i just type "bicon" and then use the app that has arabic letters, as lynx
[
example:
bicon
lynx http://somod.shiaweb.org/
then i see http://chod.sk/aysu4
which is correct
]

however, turses wont start if i type bicon first (i saw this problem before with other console apps)

@joedicastro

I think this is due to the lack of support for RTL (right-to-left) languages. I even don't know if Urwid support this. In any case, the best option should be the support of bidirectional text (BiDi) for display both directions (LTR & RTL) at the same time.

P.S. I was searching in the Urwid docs and didn't see any reference of RTL or BiDi. I only found this, a six years old open ticket tagged as a minor priority

I sent a message to the urwid mailing list asking about the plans for the ticket. I guess that we are blocked by the lack of bidirectional text support of urwid.

@wardi

BiDi support is something I really want to have in Urwid, but I don't know the best way to do this and support the various ways terminals display RTL mixed with LTR.

I'm following up on this in the Urwid mailing list: http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.comp.lib.urwid/1250

If you can help us with adding BiDi support to Urwid please join the discussion there or on irc.oftc.net #urwid
