I don't know whether this is a problem with Django or django-inplaceedit, but when USE_THOUSAND_SEPARATOR = True in the settings file, inplaceedit fails because the object id is split, like this:
"GET /inplaceeditform/get_field/?obj_id=2,637"

It's related to this problem which was closed several years ago:
https://code.djangoproject.com/ticket/13032

Don't know if it helps but I have these settings:
LANGUAGE_CODE = 'en-gb'
USE_I18N = True
USE_L10N = True

I can sort of get around it by doing this but it's a bit of a pain:
{% inplace_edit "painting.price|intcomma" loads="humanize" %}
