Can someone help me to install wine on this Crouton XFCE? I'm a beginner when it comes to linux as a PC. Any help with terminal commands and pre-pakages that need to be installed would be appreciated. I'm running into all sorts of issues trying to install from the basic instructions and anything I could find on forums.

aptitude install wine

iirc and it worked.

Hi rminnich,

Can you provide me the repository that you installed this?

I added 'sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa'

but won't let me install wine1.5

Thanks!

If I have to compile it on my Samsung, please provide all the Terminal commands form starting libraries to downloading the proper files.

WINE does not and will not work on the ARM Chromebook, as Windows executables are i386/x64, and WINE runs them directly (it is not an emulator). It works fine on x86-based Chromebooks using the version in the repositories.

just throwing it out there (haven't tried myself) -- what about qemu? i.e. arm-based chromebook -> crouton -> qemu -> wine -> x86-based windows binary ? do you think this might work (e.g. on something like samsung chromebook XE303C12 with 2 gig ram) ... ?

That would be unusably slow. Unless you need some very basic CLI utilities or something, you're not going to want to go that route.

Yeah, I think you're right, it will probably be very very slooow... I am not sure how these youtube demos of running x86 GUI binaries on linux arm arch comare to the samsung's series 3 chromebook processor specs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9G06JmL9mkQ and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVYlrv0kbdA
but i guess I could always have a go at it... presumably there are qemu et al packages for ubuntu in arm's chain of repos ;-)

That's way more responsive than I would have imagined. Try it out!

I know it's an old thread, but here's hoping... I have Trusty & XFCE running via Crouton on an HP14 - Haswell chipset. I installed WINE via the command line, but I don't see the app in anything, anywhere. No context menu, when I open the .exe that I'm trying to run, I get the application finder and WINE doesn't seem to be anywhere.

Thanks!
