  1. Fixed encoding error in Ruby 1.9.1

    Christian Höltje authored committed
It was returning strings encoded as US-ASCII, but it is about to
become binary data to send to the fastcgi interface.
  2. Fixed references to bytes with a string.

In ruby 1.9.1, you can't get the ordinal of a character from a string
using the subscripting operator '[]'; 1.9.1 returns a single character
    string instead.

By appending .ord, this works in both 1.8.7 and 1.9.1:
     * 1.8.7 returns a Fixnum, of which .ord returns itself.
     * 1.9.1 returns a single character string, which supports .ord
