<a name="introduction"></a>
## Introduction
The <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.RadioButtonList> control provides page developers with a single-selection radio button group that can be dynamically generated through data binding. It contains an <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.ListControl.Items%2A> collection with members that correspond to individual items on the list. To determine which item is selected, test the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.ListControl.SelectedItem%2A> property of the list.
<a name="specifying_list_layout"></a>
## Specifying List Layout
You can specify how the list is rendered by setting the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.RadioButtonList.RepeatLayout%2A> and <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.RadioButtonList.RepeatDirection%2A> properties. For information about layout options, see the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.RepeatLayout> enumeration.
By default, <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.RadioButtonList.RepeatDirection%2A> is set to `RepeatDirection.Vertical`. Setting this property to `RepeatDirection.Horizontal` causes the control to render the list horizontally. Some <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.RadioButtonList.RepeatLayout%2A> settings do not allow horizontal layout. For more information, see the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.RepeatLayout> enumeration.
> [!CAUTION]
> This control can be used to display user input, which might include malicious client script. Check any information that is sent from a client for executable script, SQL statements, or other code before displaying it in your application. You can use validation controls to verify user input before displaying the input text in a <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.RadioButtonList> control. ASP.NET provides an input request validation feature to block script and HTML in user input. For more information, see [Securing Standard Controls](https://msdn.microsoft.com/library/f3e7718f-63d0-44a3-bd5f-48cc2059c2a8), [How to: Protect Against Script Exploits in a Web Application by Applying HTML Encoding to Strings](https://msdn.microsoft.com/library/6f67973f-dda0-45a1-ba9d-e88532d7dc5b), and [Validating User Input in ASP.NET Web Pages](https://msdn.microsoft.com/library/4ad3dacb-89e0-4cee-89ac-40a3f2a85461).
<a name="accessibility"></a>
## Accessibility
For information about how to configure this control so that it generates markup that conforms to accessibility standards, see [Accessibility in Visual Studio and ASP.NET](https://msdn.microsoft.com/library/7e3ce9c4-6b7d-4fb1-94b5-72cf2a44fe13) and [ASP.NET Controls and Accessibility](https://msdn.microsoft.com/library/847a37e3-ce20-41da-b0d3-7dfb0fdae9a0).

## Remarks
This property applies only when the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.RadioButtonList.RepeatLayout%2A> property is set to `RepeatLayout.Table`.
Use this property to control the spacing between the contents of a cell and the cell's border.
The padding amount specified is added to all four sides of a cell. It uses the height of the tallest cell in the table and the width of the widest cell in the table. The resulting cell size is applied uniformly to all cells in the table. Individual cell sizes cannot be specified.

The following code example demonstrates how to use the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.RadioButtonList.CellPadding%2A> property to pad the cells of a <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.RadioButtonList> control with 10 pixels.

## Remarks
The <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.RadioButtonList.LoadPostData%2A> method is used primarily by control developers in custom controls that derive from the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.RadioButtonList> class.
The <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.RadioButtonList.LoadPostData%2A> method indicates whether the state of the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.RadioButtonList> control has changed. In other words, it determines whether the selected list item in the control is the same as the last posted value. A user changing the selected item in the control changes the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.ListControl.SelectedIndex%2A> value for the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.RadioButtonList> control. If the same list item is selected in the control, or if the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.RadioButtonList> control is disabled, <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.RadioButtonList.LoadPostData%2A> returns `false`.
When the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.RadioButtonList.LoadPostData%2A> method returns `true` for a control, the ASP.NET page framework invokes the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.RadioButtonList.RaisePostDataChangedEvent%2A> method for the control.

## Remarks
The <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.RadioButtonList.RaisePostDataChangedEvent%2A> method is used primarily by control developers in custom controls that derive from the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.RadioButtonList> class.
The ASP.NET page framework calls the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.RadioButtonList.RaisePostDataChangedEvent%2A> method on a <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.RadioButtonList> control when the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.RadioButtonList.LoadPostData%2A> method indicates that the state of the list items have changed in the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.RadioButtonList> control. The <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.RadioButtonList.RaisePostDataChangedEvent%2A> method calls the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.ListControl.OnSelectedIndexChanged%2A> method to raise the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.ListControl.SelectedIndexChanged> event. Control developers can override the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.ListControl.OnSelectedIndexChanged%2A> method to perform custom processing when the user changes the selected item in the control.
The `RaisePostBackEvent` method can optionally perform validation before raising the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.ListControl.SelectedIndexChanged> event for the control. To validate a group of controls on the page when a list item within the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.RadioButtonList> control is selected, set the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.ListControl.AutoPostBack%2A> and <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.ListControl.CausesValidation%2A> properties to `true`, and then specify the group of controls to be validated in the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.ListControl.ValidationGroup%2A> property.

## Remarks
This method is used primarily by control developers in custom controls that derive from the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.RadioButtonList> class.
The <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.RadioButtonList.Render%2A> method implementation for a <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.RadioButtonList> control initializes a <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.RepeatInfo> object for the list, and calls the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.RepeatInfo.RenderRepeater%2A> method, which in turn uses the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.RadioButtonList.RenderItem%2A> method to render individual radio button list items.
## Examples
The following code example demonstrates how to override the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.RadioButtonList.Render%2A> method in a custom server control so that the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.RadioButtonList> control is always displayed with descriptive text.

When the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.RadioButtonList.RepeatLayout%2A> property is set to <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.RepeatLayout.Table>, you can use this property to specify the number of columns that display items in the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.RadioButtonList> control. If this property is not set, the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.RadioButtonList> control displays all items in the list in a single column.
